TULSA, Okla. – The Tulsa volleyball team's non-conference slate comes to an end this weekend, as the Golden Hurricane head to the bluegrass state for the WKU Volleyball Invitational. The three-day tournament, hosted by Western Kentucky, will take place at the E.A. Diddle Arena.
Tulsa (6-4) begins the tournament facing a dominant Samford (6-2) team on Friday, Sept. 20 at 1:00 p.m. After losing its first two matches of the season, the Bulldogs charge into Kentucky having won six consecutive matches, including a 3-2 upset on the road at then 24th-ranked Arizona. The is one of two opponents this weekend that the Golden Hurricane will face for the first time in program history.
The Golden Hurricane will then take on a hot Western Kentucky team on Friday evening. After falling to nationally-ranked Louisville earlier this season, the Hilltoppers have won six-straight contests with five of them ending in sweeps. The only match that went beyond three sets was against American foe Tulane. Western Kentucky is one of 13 teams "also receiving vote" in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Poll.
WKU has been very successful on its home court over the past couple seasons. Since 2011, the Hilltoppers have boasted a 107-9 record at the E.A. Diddle Arena. Friday's meeting between the two teams will be the first since 1991 and fourth all-time. Tulsa leads Western Kentucky, 2-1.
Tulsa squares off against Northern Kentucky in its final match of the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 3:00 p.m. The Norse (5-4) enter the tournament snapping a three-game skid last weekend to Cincinnati, who is also receiving votes in the AVCA Poll. Like Samford, this is the first time Tulsa and Northern Kentucky have met on the same court.
Following the WKU Volleyball Invitational, the Golden Hurricane will start preparing for American Athletic Conference play. Tulsa will host Wichita State in the conference opener on Friday, Sept. 27 at 7:00 p.m.
