Tulsa Women’s Tennis Starts Fall Schedule at Mizzou Invite

9/19/2019 2:15:00 PM | Women's Tennis

TULSA, Okla. - The Tulsa women's tennis team opens its fall schedule on Friday, Sept. 20, as the Golden Hurricane travel to Missouri for the Mizzou Invite at the Mizzou Tennis Complex. The three-day invitational will also feature SMU and Houston.

The Golden Hurricane feature one of the top doubles tandems in the nation. Seniors Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner ranked fifth in the 2019-20 Preseason Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division I Women's Double National Rankings, which were announced on Tuesday.

Okalova and Ploner capped off their junior season going 29-7 overall and 15-4 in doubles competition. Their historic season included the duo advancing to the NCAA doubles quarterfinal round, which is the furthest any TU doubles team has gone in program history. In addition, Okalova and Ploner became the second and third All-American's in school history, joining Anousjka van Exel.

Okalova was also ranked 73rd in the Women's Division I Individual National Rankings. That is the highest the Slovakian has been ranked in the ITA Poll since last year's preseason poll where she ranked 54th. She concluded singles play with a 13-9 overall record, including an 11-8 mark at No. 1 singles.

Following the Mizzou Invite, the Golden Hurricane come back to Tulsa, as the ITA, the University of Tulsa, and the Tulsa Sports Commission host the Saint Francis Health System ITA All-American Championships. The eight-day event will take places October 5-13 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center and the Case Tennis Center at LaFortune Park.
