Tulsa Men’s Tennis Schedule Features Nine Preseason Top-30 Teams; Opens Sunday

TULSA, Okla. - The 2020 Tulsa men's tennis team opens its spring schedule this Sunday against Mercer in a doubleheader at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The first match takes place at 8:30 a.m., followed by a contest a 1 p.m.
The Tulsa schedule features nine teams ranked among the nation's top-30 in the Oracle Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Division I Men's preseason rankings, including #2 Texas, #5 Baylor, #8 TCU, #9 Texas A&M, #15 Oklahoma State, #22 Oklahoma, #26 Alabama, #30 UCF and a possible matchup against #6 Ohio State.
The Hurricane will host two of those matches at home including on Jan. 31 against Texas A&M and March 11 against Oklahoma.
Sunday's match with Mercer is the second straight season the Golden Hurricane have played the Bears. Tulsa was victorious in a 6-1 decision on January 15, 2019.
During fall competition, sophomore Kody Pearson had a breakout performance at the ITA Central Regional Championships. The Australian native became the fourth men's tennis player in program history to win the singles regional title.
Pearson earned an automatic bid to the 2019 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships in Newport Beach, California. While his six-match winning streak was snapped in the opening round, he won his way to the consolation semifinals. Pearson posted an 8-2 mark over the two tournaments and defeated three top 70 opponents. He ended the fall season ranked 98th in the ITA singles rankings.
A year ago, the Bears went 11-15 overall with an appearance in the semifinal round of the Southern Conference Championships. Mercer's Oliver Stuart is currently ranked 46th in ITA singles rankings.
