Kayla Moutry had a career-best 19 points and three blocks to lead Tulsa to a 58-56 win over ECU on Tuesday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The Golden Hurricane moved to 6-13 on the season and 1-5 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Pirates fell to 3-15 overall and 0-5 in the league.
"Kayla was unbelievable," Head Coach Matilda Mossman said. "We know how tough she is and against ECU we needed toughness. Kayla came in in the first half and gave us a lift, and then she did the same thing in the second. She made plays, got the ball to the right people, she came up with a huge block in the fourth quarter and she was what we needed tonight."
Rebecca Lescay fell one-point shy of her career high with 15 points, while Kendrian Elliott added nine points and a team-high 14 rebounds, and Addison Richards posted eight points.
"Rebecca was efficient," Mossman said. "She is playing hurt, but she is a tough kid. She won't back down and won't let an injury slow her down."
ECU had 25 offensive rebounds, but only recorded eight second chance points. The Pirates, however, converted 20 points off turnovers as they forced 24 by the Golden Hurricane.
The Golden Hurricane jumped out to a 13-4 lead at the 4:49 mark of the first quarter, but the Pirates battled back to pull within one, 13-12, with 1:58 to play in the frame, and TU had a 16-14 advantage at the end of the period.
ECU took their first lead of the game, 17-16, on a three-pointer by Taniyah Thompson to start the second quarter and had a four-point advantage, 22-18, with 6:44 to play in the frame. Two Pirates layups later and ECU owned a 26-23 advantage with 2:37 to play and took a 26-25 lead into the break.
The Pirates climbed to a 7-point advantage three times in the third quarter, including a 41-34 lead with 3:12 to play in the frame, but Tulsa battled back to pull within two 41-39 at the end of the period.
A pair of free throws made by Moutry and a layup by Lescay put TU on top, 43-41, but a pair of free throws made by ECU's Katerina Tsineke evened the score at the 7:58 mark. The score was tied again at 45-45 with 7:12 to play, 50-50 at the 4:06 mark, and 53-53 with 1:20 left in the contest.
Moutry hit a jumper in the paint to put Tulsa up by two, 55-53, with 28 seconds to play, and then converted on two free throw attempts for a 57-53 lead. A three-pointer by Lashonda Monk made it a one-point game, 57-56, but another free throw made by Moutry gave TU the two-point win as a Monk missed a layup with no time left on the clock.
Tulsa shot 44-percent from the field, including 35-percent from three-point range, and were 12-of-15 from the line, while ECU shot 29-percent from the field, 28-percent from behind the arc and were 10-of-14 from the line.
ECU had a 40-36 lead in rebounds and a 12-7 advantage in steals, while Tulsa had a 17-6 lead in assists and a 7-2 edge in blocks.
