Spotlight on Senior Zach Smith
#11 Zach Smith • 6-3 • 227 • Senior • Quarterback

What do I like most about football…
I like the competitiveness, and then of course, the camaraderie with my teammates.

In high school…
I played football and basketball. I graduated early my senior year, so I only played three years of baseball, but all four years of football

When I knew football was the route I would go…
Near the end of my sophomore year. It was the recruitment by coach Montgomery and Coach Briles from Baylor and some other colleges. I figured it was the best shot I had to play at the next level

Favorite thing about my hometown of Grandview, Texas…
It's a simple town. It's a small town. You know dang near everyone in the town, and that's pretty cool. You have more of a relationship with a lot more people than if you were in a bigger city and that's pretty neat. Also, it doesn't take very long to get through the town. You don't have to wait in traffic.

My role model…
My dad is the biggest role model I have in my life. He works so hard and has made our family proud.

Favorite NFL team…
The Cowboys

Favorite NFL player…
Not only one, but two –– Tom Brady and Aaron Rodgers. They're both really great quarterbacks. Tom Brady has an absolute killer mindset and that has contributed to a lot of his success. Aaron Rodgers has that same kind of mindset and some of the throws he makes are absolutely ridiculous.

What drives me…
Probably the competitiveness. Competing with myself and wanting to better myself in different ways and be successful. Every day is a competition. You win or you lose. And definitely my faith in God. Trying to be the best person I can be and live in his image are what drives me.

My Hobbies…
My hobbies are fishing, hunting and golfing

My favorite fishing spot…
All I'll say is that it's in Texas and somewhere around my hometown. Not too many people are aware of this spot. I mostly fish for largemouth bass and occasionally crappie and catfish.

I enjoy hunting too…
We have a lot of feral pigs back home on our property that cause a lot of property damage and damage to crops, so I'll hunt for them a lot. Also, we have cattle, so the coyote problem is pretty big when it comes to killing livestock. Then when its deer season, I'll hunt for deer, and same thing for dove and duck season, so it's a little bit of everything.

Playing golf…
I like to golf. Usually it's Zaven (Collins) and Seth (Boomer) that golf together. Occasionally Brandon Marquardt will golf with us. Bryson (Powers) and Cannon (Montgomery) are getting into it a little bit. During the season we can't golf much, but off-season if we can find some good rates, we'll try to go at least once a week.

Why I wear No. 11…
I originally started wearing No. 11 when I was younger playing baseball and football, if I was able to wear it. I chose No. 11 mainly because my dad wore that number in high school. I just always liked that number.

Memorable moment playing football…
Maybe my first college touchdown was a pretty big moment against Northwestern State when I was a freshman at Baylor. At Tulsa, I'd say the win we had last time out at UCF, and the wins against UCF and Wyoming last year.

What I like about TU…
I love the people. There are great people here at the university. Not only the coaches, staff and my teammates, but the professors and other students. Its' a great place to be. It's a beautiful campus.

I never had free queso before…
My first semester at Tulsa we went to Three Tequila's in Brookside and they had free queso. I already liked Tulsa, but when I got free queso, I was like 'Tulsa ain't too bad of a place'.  I never had free queso before. It's a delicacy. Good Mexican food is pretty hard to beat.
