Tulsa Falls to Cougars in Houston

HOUSTON, Texas Martins Igbanu scored 12 points in the second half, but Tulsa fell to the Houston Cougars 76-43 Wednesday night at the Fertitta Center.
 
Igbanu scored 15 points on 5-of-7 for 71-percent from the field to lead the Golden Hurricane. The senior grabbed 5 rebounds, had a steal and a block.
 
Tulsa drops to 17-9 on the season and 9-4 in the American Athletic Conference. Houston improves their record to 21-6 and 11-3 in the AAC.
 
Jeriah Horne also scored in double-figures for Tulsa with 12 points on 5-of-8 shooting for the game. He went 2-of-5 from three and pulled in a team-high 7 rebounds in the game.
 
Igbanu came out of halftime on fire, making the first 7 points for the Hurricane, as all 5 of his made field goals came in the second half. However, Tulsa was outscored 50-23 in the second half, shooting 16-of-6 (35%) from the field, 4-of-20 from three and 7-of-19 from the free throw line.
 
Tulsa scored 24 points in the paint compared to the Cougars 12, but the home team knocked down 9 three-pointers. Houston was led by Caleb Mills who scored 27 points in the game, including 22 in the second half. Nate Hinton put in 15 points for the Cougars making 10-of-10 free throws in the second half.
 
Tulsa jumped out to a 5-0 lead quickly in the first half on a Lawson Korita three and an Elijah Joiner layup. Tulsa regained the lead at 20-19 on a Horne layup with 3:29 left in the first half, but the Cougars closed out the ha;f on a 7-0 run to take a 26-20 lead into halftime.
 
Joiner and Horne led the Hurricane at the break with 7 points each. Fabian White Jr. led the Cougars at the break with 8 points.
 
Tulsa returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 22 in the Reynolds Center for Legends Day against SMU at 2:00 p.m. A special ceremony fo the retirement of the No. 32 jersey or Bobby "Bingo" Smith will take place at halftime.
