Latino Heritage Month Alumni Spotlight – Diego Henriquez

Diego Henriquez was a four-year letterwinner (2005-08) for the Tulsa men's soccer team. He played in 65 career games, and had three goals and four assists for 10 points. Henriquez helped the Golden Hurricane claim both the 2007 and 2008 Conference USA regular season and tournament championships, as well as advance to the NCAA Tournament Second Round both years.
My name is Diego Henriquez. I am from El Salvador and I graduated from TU in 2009.It is an honor for me to have graduated as a student-athlete from TU. For me it was a life changing decision, to leave my country and home at 17-18 years old.
It is very important to mention how these opportunities exist for young Latin-Americans who are willing to have the commitment to be a student-athlete. It is very important to have a family that can guide you, support you and help you achieve the opportunity, but even more valuable is the opportunity to stay for four years, and excel both on the field and in the classroom.
The benefits of having graduated from TU are invaluable, starting from what I learned and lived with my teammates, Tom McIntosh and all the coaching staff, and what I learned from all the professors from the business school. It has also led to professional opportunities that I've been a part of, the network I've created and very importantly what I can give back to the program.
After graduating in 2009, I had the opportunity to work in two major companies in Central America in the marketing area.
In 2016, I was able to create my own company - College Cup Central America. The objective of the company is to replicate cases like mine and to do so we have begun to instill the culture of 'student-athlete' in Central America. We started with boys and girls from 7 to 19 years old, supporting and guiding young student-athletes to obtain scholarships in Universities in the United States through sports. Currently, we have a league of more than 3,000 boys and girls in all age categories and 20 student-athletes with scholarships to different universities. As part of our program, once a year we travel to TU's Soccer Camp. In three years, we have taken more than 100 boys to get first-hand experience of what it takes to be a student-athlete in an NCAA program.
We have done a great job with Tom, being able to internationalize the TU soccer program and position it in Central America and El Salvador as a top program both academically and in sports. For us Central Americans, getting an opportunity at a University like TU is something special and aspirational.
Once the COVID period allows us, we will be able to resume the camps with Tom and we will continue to bring more young people closer to opportunities for personal, academic, professional and sports improvement.
Mi nombre es Diego Henriquez, soy de El Salvador y me gradué de TU en 2009.
Es un honor para mi haberme graduado como estudiante atleta de TU. Dejar mi país fue una decisión que cambió mi vida, pues allá no es tan común salir de casa a los 17-18 años.
Es muy importante mencionar como estas oportunidades existen para jóvenes que tengan el compromiso como estudiantes atletas. La palabra que viene primero, es estudiante y después atleta. Para lograr serlo, es indispensable tener un proyecto familiar, en el cual tu familia pueda guiarte, apoyarte para lograr llegar y aún más valioso quedarse los 4 años, logrando haber sobresalido tanto en el campo como en la clase.
Los beneficios de haberme graduado de TU son invaluables, desde la experiencia al jugar con cada uno de mis compañeros de equipo, Tom y todo el coaching Staff, lo aprendido de los profesores de la escuela de Negocios, las oportunidades profesionales que he tendido y las amistades que he ganado de por vida. Me siento muy afortunado de todo lo que puedo devolver al programa.
Después de graduarme en 2009, tuve la oportunidad de trabajar en 2 empresas importantes de Centroamérica en el sector de marketing. Y fue en 2016, cuando tuve la bendición de fundar mi propia empresa, su nombre es College Cup Centroamérica. El objetivo de la empresa, es poder replicar casos como el mío y para hacerlo hemos comenzado a instalar la cultura de estudiantes atletas en Centroamérica. De esta forma, podremos ayudar a jóvenes encontrar becas en Universidades de EEUU por medio del deporte. A la fecha, tenemos una liga de colegios con más de 3,000 jóvenes participando en todas las categorías y ya contamos con 20 jóvenes con becas en diferentes universidades. Dentro del programa hemos viajado con mas de 100 estudiantes atletas de nivel Bachilleres al campamento de TU.
Hemos hecho un gran trabajo con Tom, en poder internacionalizar el programa de soccer de TU y posicionarlo en Centroamérica y El Salvador como un programa TOP tanto en lo académico como en lo deportivo. Para nosotros Centroamericanos, lograr una oportunidad en una Universidad como TU, es algo aspiracional y especial.
Una vez, el tema del COVID nos permita, lograremos retomar los campamentos con Tom y seguiremos acercando a mas jóvenes a oportunidades de superación personal, académica, profesional y deportiva.
