Tulsa Falls to the Shockers in Wichita

WICHITA, Kan. –
Darien Jackson and Elijah Joiner both score in double-figures for the Golden Hurricane, but Tulsa falls in the end to Wichita State 72-53 in the Charles Koch Arena Wednesday night.
 
Jackson led Tulsa in scoring with 12 points and rebounds with 9 boards, tying his season-high. The senior scored 10 points in the second half, while grabbing 5 offensive rebounds.
 
Joiner put in 11 points on 5-12 (42-percent) shooting from the field, while grabbing 3 rebounds, dishing out 2 assists and pulling in a steal for TU without committing a turnover.
 
The Hurricane fall to 7-4 and 4-2 in American Athletic Conference play, while the Shockers move to 8-3 and 4-1 in the league
 
The Hurricane used a 12-0 second half run to cut the Shockers 17-point lead to 47-42 with 9:43 left in the half. The five-point deficit was the closest the Hurricane came to the Wichita State lead since being down 23-18 with 7:29 left in the first half.
 
With 3:31 left in the second half, Joiner knocked down a three cutting the Shockers lead to 8 at 61-53; however, Wichita State closed the game on an 11-0 run securing the 72-53 victory.
 
Joiner and Jackson led the charge for the Hurricane in the second half, combing to score 17 of Tulsa's 29 points on 8-15 (53-percent) shooting from the field.
 
Rey Idowu started the scoring for the Hurricane making a jumper in the lane, after the Shockers built an early 5-0 lead.
 
Tulsa ended the first half on a 4-minute scoring drought before Austin Richie hit a pull-up jumper with 2 seconds remaining in the opening half.
 
Tulsa shot 23-69 (33%) from the field, 4-29 (14%) from three and 3-3 (100%) from the charity stripe, while Wichita State shot 23-55 (42%) from the field, 11-29 (38%) from behind the arc and 15-23 (65%) from the free throw line.
 
Curtis Haywood II and Richie each had 7 points, while Rey Idowu put in 6 for the Hurricane. Haywood II knocked down the only three free throws that Tulsa took in the game.
 
The Shockers shot 20 more free throws that the Golden Hurricane, as TU had 16 fouls called on them compared to Wichita State's 9 fouls.
 
TU pulled in 39 rebounds to the 43 from WSU, but the Hurricane had 12 offensive rebounds to the Shockers 10. The 12 offensive boards led to 8 second chance points for Tulsa.
 
Tulsa outscored Wichita State in the paint 32-24, and the Hurricane had 25 bench points compared to the Shockers 13.
 
Wichita State was led by Tyson Etienne and Morris Udeze who each had 20 points. Udeze was 6-7 (86%) from the field and 8-9 (89%) from the free throw line. Etienne went 6-15 (40%) from the field and 5-12 (42%) from three-point range.
 
The Hurricane is back in action on Sunday, Jan. 17 as it hosts the Memphis Tigers at 2:00 p.m. in the Reynolds Center
