The Game
• Tulsa will take on the Temple Owls in a conference road matchup in the Liacouras Center Tuesday afternoon on ESPN+.
• The game is the 14th contest for Tulsa (8-5) this season ... the Owls are 3-4 on the season losing their last contest 68-51 in a home conference game against No. 8 Houston on Jan. 23.
Scouting the Owls
• Temple was picked to finish 10th in the preseason AAC Coaches Poll ... the Owls returned 2 starters and one of four top scorers from last season, when the team went 14-17 and 6-12 in conference play.
• Temple added three key pieces in Dartmouth grad transfer Brendan Berry, Butler transfer Khalif Battle and true freshman Jeremiah Williams who is third on the team in scoring averaging 8.6 points a game.
• Temple also returned Jake Forrester and J.P. Moorman who combined for 42 starts, scoring 15.3 points and 8.9 rebounds per game last season.
• The Owls opened their season scoring a season best 72 points in a win against NJIT ... they lost the next three contests 76-50 against Houston, 79-71 at home against SMU and 79-68 at SMU ... Temple has had 3 contests postponed due to Covid-19.
• Temple has won 2 of their last 3 contests defeating UCF 62-55 and Tulane 65-57 before losing to No. 8 Houston.
• The Owls are led in scoring by redshirt freshman Damian Dunn who is averaging 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game ... Forrester is averaging 9.3 points and 6.4 rebounds a game for Temple.
• Temple is led by Head Coach Aaron McKee, who was been at the helm of the Owls for the last 2 seasons and holds a 17-21 record.
The Series
• This will be the 14th contest between the Golden Hurricane and the Owls ... Tulsa leads the series at 10-3 with TU winning both meetings last season.
• TU won the first contest against the Owls in Philadelphia 64-60 on Dec. 9, 1995 under Steve Robinson in his first season as the head coach of the Hurricane.
• This is the 8th time Tulsa has taken on Temple in Philadelphia with the Hurricane holding a 4-3 advantage on the road ... the Owls have never won in Tulsa as the Hurricane is 6-0 on its home court.
A Tulsa Win Would
• Give the Hurricane its 9th win of the season, moving Tulsa to 9-5, 6-3 AAC on the year.
• Move Tulsa's all-time record against Temple to 11-3.
• Give TU its third straight win against the Owls after sweeping both contests last season.
Last Game Against the Owls
• The Golden Hurricane defeated the Owls 61-51 in the Liacouras Center on March 4, 2020.
• Senior Martins Igbanu led the way for Tulsa with 17 points on 6-of-11 (55%) from the field and 5-of-6 (83%) from the free throw line ... he scored 11 of his 17 points in the second half, adding in 4 rebounds and a block.
• Brandon Rachal recorded his 4th double-double of the season scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds ... going 4-of-7 (57%) for the Hurricane and down the stretch scoring 4 of Tulsa's final 8 points.
• The Hurricane shot 40-percent (21-53) from the field for the game and just 26-percent (6-23) from three-point range and 13-of-19 (68%) from the charity stripe.
• Tulsa held the lead for 29 minutes, including the final 26:21 of the game. Tulsa's largest lead of 20 points at 48-28 came at the 10-minute mark of the second half following an Igbanu layup.
Joiner's Leadership
• Elijah Joiner is the most seasoned Hurricane having played in 104 games with 36 starts over four seasons for Tulsa. ... he is second in scoring and rebounds for TU, averaging 9.8 points and 5.1 rebounds ... he leads the team in assists with 3.8 a game for the Hurricane.
• The guard is 6th in the AAC in assists and assist to turnover ratio while also being 10th in field goal percentage.
• Against Memphis, Joiner tied his season-high in scoring with 14 points, putting in 10 points in the second half ... the Chicago native led the team in rebounds for the third time this season with 5.
• He was named to the American Athletic Conference week one honor roll after averaging 12.5 points and 4 rebounds in games against Wichita State and Memphis.
Team Effort on the Boards
• Through the first 13 games of the season rebounding has been a team effort as the Hurricane use a guard centric lineup.
• Tulsa is averaging 35.2 rebounds a game pulling in 121 offensive and 336 defensive rebounds in 13 games.
• All six of Tulsa's guards who are under 6'6" have combined to average 17.5 rebounds a game which is 49.9-percent of the Hurricane's rebounds ... point guard Elijah Joiner is 2nd on the team in rebounds with 4.9 per game.
• Guards have led the Hurricane in rebounding 6 out of the 13 games this season ... against South Carolina and USF Joiner led the team with 7 boards and against Memphis he had 5, while Darien Jackson led the way against UTA and Wichita State with 9 ... Curtis Haywood II led TU in rebounds at Houston with 5.
• Darien Jackson crashed the offensive glass at Wichita State pulling in 7 offensive rebounds to lead TU .. he leads the team in offensive rebounds with 27 averaging 2.1 per game
• The duo of Brandon Rachal and Rey Idowu combine for 11.1 rebounds a game ... Rachal has led the team in rebounds six times - TCU (8), WSU (11), Memphis (7), SWC (10), Houston (7), and Cincinnati (13).
