Temple Edges Out Tulsa, Despite Idowu's Career-High 20

PHILADELPHIA, Pa.
– Rey Idowu scores a career-high 20 points and pulled in 4 boards; however, the Hurricane fall to the Owls 76-67 in the Liacouras Center Tuesday afternoon.
 
Idowu helped the Hurricane on a 17-4 run in the second half to cut the Temple lead down to 8 at 70-62 with 2:04 left in the game. During the run Idowu scored 6 points making a hook shot and going 4-4 from the free throw line.
 
The junior big man, who is fourth in the American Athletic Conference in field goal percentage, went 7-11 (63.6%) from the field and 6-8 (75%) from the free throw line.
 
"I thought we didn't come out the way you should come out to win on the road," said head coach Frank Haith, "I give our guys credit who didn't quit and fought well in the end."
 
Senior Elijah Joiner scored 15 for the Hurricane, while Brandon Rachal put in 12. Joiner scored 12 of his 15 in the second half and Idowu put in 15 as the duo combined for 27 of the Hurricane 42 (64.3-percent) second half points.
 
Joiner was fouled on a three-point attempt with 51 second left; knocking down all three, he cut the Temple lead to 72-65. However, after a Tulsa turnover, the Owls would make their last 4 free throw attempts and secure the 76-67 victory.
 
The Hurricane fall to 8-6 on the year and 5-4 in AAC play, while the Owls move to 4-4 on the season and 3-4 in conference action.
 
For the 5th time this season the Hurricane outscored an opponent in the second half by 10 or more points, outscoring the Owls 42-32 in the second half. In the second Tulsa shot 13-28 (46.4-percent) from the field, 3-11 (27.3-percent) from three and 13-17 (76.5-percent) from the free throw line.
 
Tulsa outscored the Owls in the paint by a 30-20 margin, but Temple received a better contribution from their bench putting in 28 points compared to TU's 26.
 
The Hurricane defense was suffocating in the second half forcing 11 of Temple's 14 turnovers in the half. Tulsa used the 14 turnovers to generate 18 points, including 6 fast break points.
 
Curtis Haywood II scored 9 for Tulsa knocking down 3-4 from the behind the three-point line, and Christian Shumate record a career-high 4 points in a career-high 11 minutes of action.
 
Temple started the game hot, outscoring the Hurricane 10-2 in the first 4 minutes of the 1st half. The Hurricane fought back going on a 10-4 run to cut the lead to 14-12. The run consisted of back-to-back threes by Rachal and Haywood II and 4 straight points from Idowu.
 
The Owls countered outscoring the Hurricane 30-13 to end the first quarter and take a 44-25 lead at the half.
 
Temple was led in the game by transfer Khalif Battle's career-high 22 points and 11 rebounds. The Owls had 4 in double-figures as De'Vondre Perry scored 17 and Damian Dunn and Jake Forrester each had 10.
 
Seven of the Hurricane 29 rebounds came on the offensive end, resulting in 10 second chance points. TU, however, was outrebounded 36-29 by the Owls.
 
Tulsa is back in action Saturday Jan. 30, as they travel to Greenville, N.C. to take on the East Carolina Pirates on ESPN+ at 11:00 a.m. (CT).
