Tulsa Wins 6th Straight Defeating USF 61-51 on Wednesday

TAMPA, Fla. – Brandon Rachal scored 13 of his 15 points in the second half, as the Golden Hurricane defeat the USF Bulls 61-51 at the Yuengling Center in Tampa, Fla. Wednesday.
The win gave the Hurricane its 6th straight on the season moving TU's record to 7-3 (4-1 AAC). With the win, Tulsa is now 10-0 all time against the bulls and 5-0 in the Yuengling Center.
Rachal led all Tulsa scorers with 15 points, shooting 6-12 (50%) from the field and 2-2 from the free throw line. The senior added 6 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists in the game.
Austin Richie and Elijah Joiner each scored 13 points for the Hurricane. Joiner led TU in the first half, scoring 9 points on 3-5 shooting from three, while Richie scored 10 of his 13 points in the first 3:55 of the second half. Joiner did it all for the Hurricane, leading the team with 7 rebounds and 6 assists.
"Our guys really competed hard; it is a great win for us. I am so proud of our guys, because it is not an easy win here on the road. We got balanced scoring and had great production all the way around," said head coach Frank Haith, "We really did a good job of getting consecutive stops with our defense to begin the game and in the second half. Our defense was outstanding. "
Darien Jackson scored 10 points on 4-5 (80%) from the field, grabbed 4 rebounds and 2 steals, while Rey Idowu put in 8 points and brought down 5 rebounds for the Hurricane.
Austin Richie sparked a 14-3 run coming out of the halftime break for the Hurricane. Richie scored 10 points during the stretch, knocking down two of his three three-pointers in the process.
Rachal, who sat out the final 14 minutes of the first half due to foul trouble, scored the other four points of the run. The senior scored 13 of his 15 points, shooting 5-10 (50%) from the field in the second half.
After TU recaptured the double-digit lead at 40-27 with 15:33 left in the game, the closest the Bulls came to the Hurricane lead was 6 at 46-40. Tulsa extended its lead back out to 13 on a 9-2 run by Rachal (5), Jackson (2) and Idowu (2).
For the second consecutive game, the Hurricane did not trail, leading the contest for 36:43. The Bulls tied the game 3 times; however, after being tied 22-22 with 1:52 left in the first, the Hurricane controlled the lead the rest of the way.
Tulsa in the game shot 43-percent (24-56) from the field, 39-percent (7-18) from three and 100-percent (6-6) from the free throw line, while USF shot 33-percent (18-55) from the field, 14-percent (3-22) from behind the arc and 75-percent (12-16) from the charity stripe.
USF (6-5, 2-3 AAC) was led their bench, who combined for 31 of the Bulls 51 points. Jamir Chaplin led USF in scoring with a career-high 16 points on 6-9 (67%) shooting for the Bulls.
The Hurricane crashed the boards, outrebounding the Bulls 35-34. Of the 35 boards, Tulsa grabbed 9 offensive rebounds, which accounted for 11 second chance points.
Tulsa's defense shined forcing USF into 15 turnovers, including 10 steals during the game. The Hurricane used the 15 turnovers to scored 15 points. TU held USF's starters to 20 points in the game and held David Collins the Bulls leading scorer on the season scoreless.
For the fourth time this season, Tulsa outscored its opponent by double-digits in the paint, as the Hurricane outscored the Bulls 30-18 in the lane.
Tulsa jumped out to a quick 14-4 lead in the first half, using a three-pointer by Joiner as a catalyst for the 9-0 run. A Joiner three at the 6:57 extended the Hurricane lead back out to 9 at 20-11.
Jackson and Idowu combined for the Hurricane 10 bench points in the first half, as the two combined for 4-7 (57%) from the field. TU used a balanced offense during the first 20 minutes, connecting on 4 three points and scoring 10 points in the paint.
Tulsa is back in the Reynolds Center on Saturday, Jan. 9 to face the UCF Knights at 1:00 p.m. CT on ESPN+.
