FRISCO, Texas — For the first time since the 1999-00 season the Tulsa men's basketball team is 10-1 after holding on for an 83-70 win over New Mexico State at the Comerica Center in Frisco, Texas. It is just the fifth time in program history that the Golden Hurricane has had 10 wins in its first 11 games of the season.
Tylen Riley posted a career-high 29 points, converting 13-of-13 free throws and recording five assists. Ade Popoola contributed 12 points, successfully making three 3-pointers from five attempts. Myles Rigsby added 10 points and recorded three steals while maintaining a perfect 6-for-6 from the free-throw line. David Green helped defensively with two blocks and grabbed six rebounds. Riley's 13-for-13 performance is the fifth most by any player in the country without a miss.
Tulsa took an early lead against New Mexico State with a strong showing in the first half, highlighted by efficient shooting from beyond the arc. Popoola opened with a 3-pointer, and Riley followed with multiple 3-point shots, contributing to Tulsa's 49-27 halftime advantage. Tulsa's defense was equally effective, forcing nine turnovers and allowing only 27 points. Despite New Mexico State's efforts, including a dunk by Cyr Malonga, Tulsa maintained control, outscoring their opponent significantly in the opening half.
New Mexico State capitalized on their scoring opportunities to outpace Tulsa in the second half. Julius Mims contributed significantly, scoring a layup at 15:41 and adding a tip-in at 7:55, helping the Aggies maintain a steady lead. Riley attempted to close the gap with a three-pointer at 7:34 and successful free throws at 2:34, but New Mexico State's offense proved too efficient. The half ended with New Mexico State outscoring Tulsa 43-34, resulting in a decisive finish.
Tulsa is off until next Friday when they head to Bowling Green, Kentucky to play Western Kentucky for the first time since 2011.
