TULSA, Okla. –– Big plays on defense and key free throws helped the Tulsa men's basketball team hold off Oregon State 64-58 in the Donald W. Reynolds Center late Monday night. Tulsa improved to 2-1 on the season, while the Beavers dropped to 1-2.
Â
"That was a great win," head coach Frank Haith said. "We played really hard. I have a lot of respect for Coach Wayne Tinkle. That team he had last year; he has three starters back from that team that went to the Elite Eight. They play tough. They have good size. To win like that today was big for us."
Â
The two teams were close from start to finish, with neither able to pull away. There were nine ties and 20 lead changes throughout the evening. For the first 32 minutes, the largest lead was Tulsa at four. It took a turnaround jumper in the lane from Rey Idowu to finally break that mark, giving Tulsa a 56-51 lead with 7:10 remaining. Buckets from Jeriah Horne and Sam Griffin put Tulsa up nine at 60-51, but the Beaver's went on a 7-0 run over the following 3:33, and suddenly it was a two-point ballgame with 47 seconds remaining.
Â
Idowu was fouled on the ensuing possession and knocked down both of his free throws to give Tulsa some breathing space at 62-58. TU's defense forced Oregon State into a tough three-pointer that was missed. Darien Jackson pulled down the rebound in a crowd of players and then went on to hit both of his free throws to make it 64-58. Oregon State had another opportunity with 14 seconds remaining, but Tulsa didn't allow a shot from beyond the arc, and instead the Beavers settled for a look just outside the lane that bounced harmlessly off the rim. Horne secured the rebound, recording a double-double in the process, as time ran out.
Â
Horne continued to play well in his return to the Tulsa lineup, scoring 17 on 6-13 shooting, including 3-5 from deep. He knocked down his only two free throw attempts and pulled down 10 rebounds. It was his first double-double of the season and sixth of his career. Griffin hit double-digits for his third-consecutive game, scoring 13 and adding two steals. Idowu flirted with a double-double himself, recording 11 points and eight rebounds, five of which gave the Hurricane extra possessions on offense.
Â
Tulsa was 21-54 (38.9 percent) from the field, while Oregon State was a slightly better 22-51 (43.1 percent) for the game. Oregon State also held the edge in three pointers, hitting 10 of their 24 attempts (41.7 percent), while the Hurricane were good from deep on six of their 23 shots (26.1 percent). But Tulsa was solid from the line, knocking down 16-of-20, including a perfect 8-8 in the second half. TU's defense caused 15 turnovers and had eight steals, leading to a 21-15 advantage in points from turnovers. The Hurricane also had a small 12-11 lead in offensive rebounds, but were more efficient in those opportunities, holding a 12-5 advantage in second-chance points.
Â
The Beavers were paced by Maurice Calloo with 20 points on 6-11 shooting. Rodrigue Andela joined him in double digits with 10 points, and he had eight rebounds himself, including five boards on offense.
Â
The first half was as tight as the rest of the game, with 15 lead changes and six ties. Tulsa got out to a 4-0 lead at the beginning, but that was the largest of the first 20 minutes. Oregon State led by as many as three in the opening half. Griffin was fouled on a last-second three-point attempt and knocked down 2-of-3 from the line, sending the teams to their respective locker rooms tied at 34.
Â
Next up for the Hurricane is a trip to Daytona Beach, Fla. for the remaining two games of the Sunshine Slam. Tulsa faces Rhode Island on Saturday at 6:30 p.m., and either Boston College or Utah on Sunday.
