DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. –– The University of Tulsa men's basketball team couldn't catch the Utah Utes as the Golden Hurricane fell in the championship of the Sunshine Slam 72-58 on Sunday evening at the Ocean Center.
Tulsa dropped to 3-2 with the loss, while Utah stayed undefeated at 5-0. Tulsa returns to the Reynolds Center to host Little Rock on Friday, Nov. 26.
Sam Griffin earned all-tournament honors for his performances this weekend and led the team with 18 points. Jeriah Horne scored 10 to go along with seven rebounds, and Tim Dalger and Darien Jackson both added seven points.
Tulsa shot 40 percent from the field and 25 percent from three-point range, while Utah knocked down 44 percent of its shots and 25 percent of its three-pointers. Utah also held a 45-29 advantage on rebounds and won the bench battle 27-14. Both Gach and Lazar Stefanovic combined to score 23 of the points off the bench for Utah.
Utah extended its nine-point halftime lead to 13 at 49-36 with 11:56 remaining before a Griffin fastbreak layup made it 49-38. Tulsa would make two more runs at the lead, getting it down to 51-46 with 8:02 to play. Then with 4:24 to play, Jackson stole the ball and took it himself, earning an old-fashioned three-point play to bring Tulsa within six at 57-51. However, that was as close as the Hurricane would get the rest of the evening, as the Utes had the lead back out to 14 (65-51) at the 3:04 mark.
Tulsa took an early 7-4 lead in the game thanks to a jumper in the lane from Rey Idowu and then a three-pointer and layup from Griffin. Tulsa had its last lead after Horne connected on a long jumper that was reviewed and called a two-pointer to give Tulsa the 11-10 advantage with 14:05 remaining in the first half. Utah took the lead for good on a second-chance jumper to make it 12-11 with 12:59 on the clock, followed by a three-pointer minutes later.
Griffin had 10 of his points in the first half, while the Hurricane shot 33.3 percent as a team. Tulsa was outrebounded 26-14 in the opening half, including nine offensive rebounds for Utah, resulting in eight second-chance points.
Tulsa returns to the Reynolds Center to host Little Rock on Friday. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. and the game will be streamed through ESPN+.
