FORT COLLINS, Colo. – The Tulsa volleyball team saw its season end Thursday night, dropping in Round One of the National Invitational Volleyball Championship against UTEP in four sets, 25-18, 21-25, 25-17, 25-19. Tulsa finishes the 2021 campaign 14-16 overall, 9-11 in American Athletic Conference play. UTEP improves to 22-7 overall and will face the winner of Colorado State and Houston Baptist tomorrow night.
Callie Cook broke the school record for solo blocks in the fourth set with 79 in her final game for Tulsa. Cook now holds the school records for solo blocks, block assists and total blocks.
Kayley Cassaday tallied 16 kills on .333 hitting percentage. The junior, who was named to the AAC All-Conference First Team earlier this week, finished the season with 455 kills. Maggie Hembree finished her career strong, recording 12 kills on .647 hitting percentage. The Jenks High School graduate finished her Golden Hurricane career with five-straight double-digit kill matches.
Tulsa started off the first set strong, going on an 8-2 run that forced an early UTEP timeout. UTEP would answer right away with a 9-0 run of its own and lead the rest of the opening set to take the early match advantage.
The second set started off almost identical to the first set. A Cook school record tying solo block gave Tulsa a 9-3 run to start the pivotal second set. Tulsa led the whole second set to even up the match.
In the third set, UTEP jumped out to an 8-4 run. The Miners extended their lead to 14-6 before ending the set on a 4-0 run to give them a crucial match advantage.
Down 10-8 in the fourth set, UTEP ripped off another critical run, going on an 11-3 run to go up 21-13 late in the fourth set. After Tulsa responded with a 5-0 run, including consecutive Aysu Dalogullari kills, to pull back within four. But it was too little, too late unfortunately for the Hurricane, as UTEP would take the fourth set and the match to end Tulsa's season.
