TU Sweeps Cal Poly in Opening Match of Wooo Pig Invitational
9/4/2025 9:18:00 PM | Volleyball
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Tulsa (2-2) swept Cal Poly (2-2) 3-0 to open Arkansas' Wooo Pig Invitational in Barnhill Arena, with the Golden Hurricane registering a .357 hitting percentage and dominating each set with scores of 25-15, 25-20, 25-21.
"Cal Poly runs one of the fastest offenses we've seen, and they've got two really dynamic outsides who can take over a match if you let them," Head Coach Lauren Ramatowski said. "I thought we did a great job serving aggressively and keeping them out of system, which really helped us control the tempo. Offensively, we were really clean—three of our attackers hit over .500, which says a lot about our execution and decision-making by Brayden Hipp. It was another really great team win, and I'm proud of how we competed start to finish."
Olivia Vance (.591), Jill Hanson (.571) and Lauren Eitler (.500), all finished above .500 in hitting percentage, with Vance leading the way with 15 kills to only two errors on 22 total attacks.
Tulsa opened the first set with a strong start, taking an early 3-0 lead with kills from Olivia Vance and Kat Cooper, assisted by Brayden Hipp. Cal Poly managed to close the gap to 5-5, but the Golden Hurricane regained momentum with a service ace by Lauren Patterson, pushing the score to 12-8. A series of errors by the Mustangs, including multiple service miscues, allowed Tulsa to extend their lead to 16-9. The team maintained control throughout the set, with Vance and Beth Bayless contributing key kills, ultimately securing a 25-15 victory in the first set.
Tulsa started the second set with a 5-0 run, featuring two kills from Vance and an effective block by Vance and Cooper. Cal Poly responded with a series of points, including consecutive service aces by Kendall Beshear to narrow the gap to 5-3. The Golden Hurricane maintained their lead through consistent offensive contributions from Lauren Eitler, who recorded multiple kills, adding to a 10-7 advantage. Despite Cal Poly's efforts to close the margin, Tulsa capitalized on several attack errors and made a decisive run to close the set, with Cooper securing the final point to win the set 25-20.
Tulsa claimed a 25-21 victory in the third set against Cal Poly, highlighted by a solid performance from Vance and Hipp. The set remained closely contested initially, with the score tied at 9-9. However, Tulsa pulled ahead thanks to a series of attack errors by Beshear and a service ace by Patterson, creating a five-point lead at 15-9. Vance played a pivotal role by contributing multiple kills, including a crucial point at 22-21, as the Golden Hurricane maintained their lead to secure the set.
In their next game, Tulsa will face Oklahoma tomorrow, September 5, with the match beginning at 4 p.m. in Barnhill Arena.
