Tulsa Women’s Tennis Tames K-State Wildcats 4-3

TULSA, Okla. –– It all came down to the final match and it was Valeryia Rozenkova who clinched the 4-3 victory for Tulsa against Kansas State on Wednesday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

Tulsa had a 3-1 lead, but within seconds of each other Kansas State tied the match with wins at the No. 6 and 3 spots. That left Rozenkova on the court at the No. 5 position in the second set after winning the first 7-6 with a 7-4 tiebreaker. The Tulsa freshman let a 4-1 second set lead slip to a 5-5 tie, but she closed it out by winning the final two games for the 7-5 victory.

Tulsa, who moved into the ITA's top-50 this week with a ranking of No. 49, improved to 10-4 on the season with the victory, while Kansas State dropped to 6-7.

Tulsa took a 1-0 lead by grabbing the doubles point with wins by the No. 27-ranked team of Martina Okalova and Vera Ploner, posting a 6-4 victory and at the No. 3 position with Megan Hopton and Laie Conde Monfort scoring a 6-3 victory.

Okalova put Tulsa up 2-0 with a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1 before K-State got on the board with a victory at the No. 2 slot.

Ploner took a 7-5, 6-3 win at the No. 4 spot to give the Hurricane a 3-1 lead in the match. Ploner trailed in the first set 5-3 before scoring wins in the final four games, and then had a little easier trek in the second set with a 6-3 victory.

Tulsa goes on the road this weekend to face North Texas on Saturday at 11 a.m. and plays at SMU on Sunday at 1 p.m.
