Tulsa’s Varsity 4+ Records Top Mark in B Final at Longhorn Invitational

Tulsa's Varsity 4+ recorded a top finish in the 'B' Final, while the 2nd Varsity 4+, Varsity 8+ and 2nd Varsity 8+ all captured second-place marks in the 'B' Finals on Saturday morning at the Longhorn Invitational in Austin, Texas.

"I thought the team handled themselves really well," Head Coach Kevin Harris said.  "It was a really tricky situation with the winds and the water conditions, it was tough to get off the dock let alone race, but the races went well.  As a team we raced better in the second set of races comparted to the first set in terms of how we executed.  We are just now coming into our stride as we come towards the end of our season, which is a good thing.  The changes we made over spring break are starting to show some fruit and it was good to see us close some gaps against teams that we raced earlier this season, as well as get after some crews we haven't seen in a while."

In the Heats, the Golden Hurricane faced No. 2 Texas, No. 1 (Division II) Central Oklahoma and Notre Dame, which is receiving votes in the latest Pocock CRCA Poll presented by USRowing.  From the Heats, TU advanced to the 'B' Final in all four races, adding in opponents that included No. 14 SMU and Oklahoma.

Isabella Musollino, Ermioni Lamprianidou, Helena Gutzmer, Gabrielle Cook and Kelsey Viane raced the Varsity 4+ to a third-place finish in the Heat with a time of 7:30.056, trailing Texas (7:05.173) and Notre Dame (7:23.459), but topping UCO (7:42.576).  In the 'B' Final, Tulsa crossed the finish line first with a time of 7:28.699 ahead of Oklahoma (7:49.815) and Central Oklahoma (7:50.971).

In the 2nd Varsity 4+, Erica Taylor, Julianna Lynch, Robine Van Doorn, Kyra VanderWeele and Katherine Stenning finished third (7:51.990) behind Texas (7:24.458) and Notre Dame (7:41.986) in the Heat.  SMU posted a time of 7:33.600 to take first place in the 'B' Final as TU was second (7:53.340) and Oklahoma was third (8:21.410).

"I was pleased with how the Fours have improved since our first two races," Harris said. "They have found the speed that was there and have stepped up.  Coach Olivia Staff and Coach Kerry Hassall have been working hard to help our team find themselves."

Chloe Henderson, Madlen Markova, Sarolta Papp, Karen Undset, Bobbi Forster, Becky Coleman, Suzannah Hornett, Johanna Kristof and Nicole Workman turned in a time of 6:35.023 for fourth place in the Varsity 8+ Heat, trailing Texas (6:10.433), Notre Dame (6:32.909) and Central Oklahoma (6:33.118).  The TU team then had a second-place time of 6:32.916 in the 'B' Final as UCO was first (6:30.396) and Oklahoma was third (6:35.512).

"In the Varsity 8+ race we were 10 strokes from crossing the line when we caught a crab," Harris said.  "We were catching UCO and ahead of OU when it happened.  There was a chance to have Oklahoma come back through us, but the team didn't panic and were able to hold off OU and have a great sprint to the finish."

In the 2nd Varsity 8+, Isabel Stutte, Julia Olawumi, Ariadni Mitsi, Bass Andre, Ivanina Petrova, Millie Brice, Ella Stanhope, Chloe Wild and Meredith Galloway finished third in the Heat with a time of 7:10.532 behind Texas (6:19.046) and Notre Dame (6:40.836).  In the 'B' Final, Notre Dame topped TU with their time of 6:38.617, while the Hurricane was second (6:50.059) and Oklahoma was third (6:56.570).

Tulsa will return to action on Saturday, May 1 against Creighton at the J. Bird Sr. Shell Nest in Catoosa, Okla.
