Tulsa's 23rd-ranked men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 decision at SMU on Tuesday afternoon at the Washburne Soccer and Track Stadium in Dallas, Texas. The Golden Hurricane fell to 5-3-1 on the season, while the Mustangs moved to 5-4 overall.
"SMU started out really strong, but we started to hold possession and we were in a good spot. They hadn't created a dangerous chance until we had poor shape in their half and it left us exposed. We can't make that kind of mistake and deservedly we got punished for it. The second goal we were there to make a play, but we didn't make a play to clear it and we put ourselves in a hole. We were pushing and trying to get a goal, but we were exposed to a counter-attack and the third goal happened as a result of that. SMU played well and moved the ball well. We know they are a good team," Head Coach Tom McIntosh said.
Papa Ndoye put the Mustangs on the board at the 24:44 mark. He picked up a pass from Skage Simonsen at midfield, dribbled the ball through an open field to go one-on-one with Lucas Cline and scored from 12 yards out.
Harvey Castro gave SMU a two-goal cushion in the 51st minute as he drilled in a put-back attempt from a yard out, and then Skage Simonsen recorded a goal in the 86th minute as he scored from right to left from six yards out.
Jonathan Cervantes had a team-best four shots, while Til Zinnhardt and Mariano Fazio both added three shots and Ben Barkley had two attempts. Lucas Cline logged all 90 minutes in goal and picked up seven saves.
SMU had a 25-14 lead in shots, including a 10-5 advantage in shots on goal, while Tulsa had a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
Tulsa will return to action on Friday, April 9 against USF beginning at 7:00 pm at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.
