TAMPA, Fla. – The Hurricane start strong, scoring in the 1st inning, but drop the series opener to the USF Bulls 3-1 Friday morning.
Kylie Norwood started things off for TU by drawing a walk before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt from Haley Morgan. Chenise Delce and Aubree Seaney both drew walks, loading the bases for Imani Edwards. The freshman's soft liner to third base was enough to bring Norwood home giving TU the 1-0 lead.
Delce was dealing from the circle, allowing just two hits while striking out 3 in the first two innings.
In the top of the third with two outs, Delce singled to right field. Seaney smashed a ball to center field which was dropped by the Bulls center fielder; however, due to the angle of the umpire's sight was called an out. The inning ended the next at bat, as the Hurricane runner was caught trying to steal second base.
The Hurricane recorded just two hits on the day, as Sarah Briers and Delce were responsible for each. Tulsa also drew 3 walks during the contest, all coming in the 1st inning.
USF led off the bottom half of the inning with a single through the right side, as the runner would steal second base during the next at bat. With two outs in the inning, a Bulls' single score the runner for second to tie the game at 1-1.
During the bottom of the 5th inning, USF singled to left field and used a walk to put two on with one out. A double scored the runner from second giving the Bulls a 2-1 lead.
Kylee Nash came in for relief, replacing Delce who went 4.1 innings, allowing 2 runs on 8 hits while striking out 5.
Celyna Shaw made the highlight of the game, recovering a wild pitch from Nash before diving to home plate tagging the runner who attempted to score from third. The play saved a run, and Nash forced a ground ball to end the inning two batters later.
USF pushed another runner across in the bottom of the inning on an error by the Hurricane. Tulsa could not get anything going from the plate, as the Bulls took game one of the series 3-1.
The Hurricane and Bulls are back in action tomorrow at the USF Softball Stadium in a double-header starting at 1:00 p.m. airing on ESPN+.
