Tulsa Ready to Race at The American Championship on Sunday

5/14/2021 10:21:00 AM | Rowing

The Tulsa rowing team is set to compete in the 2021 American Athletic Conference Rowing Championship on Sunday, May 16 beginning at 8:00 am Central on Lake Melton in Oak Ridge, Tenn.

Fans can watch the action live on ESPN+ and follow along with live results HERE.

"Despite the reality of COVID-19, this season has been an amazing experience for our team," Head Coach Kevin Harris said.  "It's been exciting to see how the group has come together and really invested in the word "trust".  They believe in each other and have worked hard to keep the team healthy and performing no matter the challenges and we are all excited to see the final product at our American Athletic Conference Championship this weekend."

"This will be the most interesting rowing championship we have seen.  Some of our conference teams couldn't make the trip for varying reasons so there will only be five (Tulsa, SMU, UCF, Temple, Sacramento State) competing.  We are already one of the most even conferences in the country in terms of speed and talent across all the schools and having only five teams contesting the championship will only concentrate that speed.  It's going to be fast racing and Tulsa is excited to get after it."

"One thing that is happening on Friday is that our Interim University President, Janet Levit, is calling in to conduct a graduation for our seniors.  Janet has been an amazing leader in one of the toughest years any university could face.  She is a TU sports fan and our "honorary coach".  We are honored that she would take the time to make sure our 2021 graduates have the best graduation possible while we are racing at the conference championship."

UCF looks to defend its title after winning the previous five crowns. SMU finished second in 2019, while Tulsa, which finished third two years ago, was the runner-up in 2015-18.

The Mustangs come in looking for their first American Athletic Conference title and are ranked No. 12 in the latest USRowing/Pocock CRCA national rankings.

The team championship and NCAA automatic qualifier will be determined by the points accrued in the three NCAA events: Varsity 8+, 2nd Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+. The teams will also compete in the 2nd Varsity 4+.

SMU is seeded first in the Varsity 8+ and 2nd Varsity 8+ and second in the Varsity 4+. UCF is seeded first in the V4+, second in the V8+ and third in the 2V8+. Tulsa is seeded second in the 2nd Varsity 8+ and third in the Varsity 8+ and Varsity 4+. Temple is seeded fourth in all three events, while Sacramento State is seeded fifth.

The American's team champion will earn automatic qualification to the 2021 NCAA Rowing Championships, to be held May 28-30 at Nathan Benderson Park in Sarasota, Fla.
