Alex Meinhard had the lone goal to give Tulsa a 1-0 win over Omaha on Sunday night at Caniglia Field in Omaha, Neb. The Golden Hurricane moved to 2-0 on the season, while the Mavs fell to 0-2 overall.
"It was a good result against a good team," Tulsa Head Coach Tom McIntosh said. "I thought we started the game alright, passed the ball pretty well and showed good patience, but they put more pressure on us in the second half. We didn't cope with the pressure like we needed to, but Nolan Cosgrove came up with some big saves tonight. We need different guys to step up on different nights and tonight it was Nolan. Sometimes you have to grind a game out but give credit to Omaha because they put us under a lot of pressure, but give credit to our guys for making plays in and around the box to get the win. It was good to come up here and get two wins, but we have to get a lot better moving forward."
Meinhard scored his second goal in as many games as he drilled in a score from the top of the 18-yard box off a cross by Chase Bromstedt at the 29:02 mark. Meinhard's shot hit off the crossbar but bounced into the goal to put Tulsa up 1-0.
Neither team found the back of the net for the next 60:58 off the clock to make Meinhard's goal the game winner.
TU had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks, while Omaha had an 11-6 lead in shots, including a 4-2 edge in shots on goal.
Ben Barkley had a team-best two shots, while Meinhard, Bromstedt, Tom Protzek and Henry Sach each had four attempts. Cosgrove logged all 90 minutes in goal and picked up four saves.
Tulsa will return to action on Friday, September 3 against Missouri State beginning at 7:00 pm at the Hurricane Soccer and Track Stadium.
