TULSA, Okla. ― The Tulsa women's tennis team continued its impressive start to the season, defeating Kansas 5-2 Friday afternoon at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center to improve to 4-0 on the season.
Â
"I think it's a pretty solid start to the season being 4-0," head coach Dean Orford said. "This early on, nobody blinked, and we fought all the way through, so pretty good start to the season".
Â
Tulsa took the doubles point to start off the match, behind 6-3 wins from Laia Conde Monfort/Shura Poppe and Lily Hutchings/Ana Naranjo Martinez.
Â
The duo of Hutchings/Martinez started Tulsa off on the right track, being the first doubles team to win. After Kansas won on the first court to tie the doubles at one apiece, Monfort/Poppe clinched the point after a KU return into the net.
Â
With the match tied 1-1, Tulsa rattled off three straight points to clinch the match, courtesy of wins from Leonor Oliveira, Valeryia Rozenkova, and Hutchings.
Â
Monfort, Rozenkova, Hutchings, and Oliveira all won in straight set to give Tulsa its 4th win of the season.
Â
Monfort, who's ranked No. 91 in singles, tallied her first ranked win of the season, defeating No. 109 Malkia Ngounoue 6-3, 7-5 for the fifth Tulsa point.
Â
"Across the board, whether it be singles or doubles, everyone contributed, which you love to see," Orford said. "Everybody had a hand in this win today for sure."
