
Tulsa Falls at Tulane

NEW ORLEANS, LA. –– Tulane's hot shooting doomed the University of Tulsa men's basketball team in a 97-63 loss at the Avron B. Fogelman Arena on Wednesday evening.

With the loss, Tulsa dropped to 6-12 and 0-7 in The American Athletic Conference, while Tulane improved to 8-9 and 5-3 in the conference.

Tulane shot 60 percent from the field for the evening (35-58), and an even better 64 percent (14-22) from beyond the arc. The Golden Hurricane connected on 41 percent of its shot, going 19-of-46 from the field. Tulsa also knocked down eight threes but finished 33 percent from deep.

Tulsa lost the turnover battle 16-7 and were outrebounded 41-26. Tulane outscored the Golden hurricane 38-20 in the paint and 24-4 on turnovers. Tulane had 10 steals while Tulsa uncharacteristically had only a singular steal.

Sam Griffin paced the Hurricane with 21 points and five assists. He knocked down five triples and was perfect on his four free throws. Rey Idowu also had a 10-point performance, while Tim Dalger and LaDavius Draine both pulled down five rebounds to lead the team.

Tulane was led in scoring by 24 from Jaylen Forbes and 23 from Jalen Cook. The Two combined for 10 3-pointers on the evening. Kevin Cross added 15 and led Tulane with eight rebounds.

In his first start since SMU, Griffin came out firing, hitting his first two 3-pointers to give the Hurricane an early 6-5 lead. Tulane got an and-one to go back up 8-6 before an Idowu layup evened the score. The two teams traded 3-pointers to even the score at 11 headed into the first media timeout at the 15:13 mark.

Tulane went on a 12-1 run out of the timeout with Tulsa's only points coming from Jackson going 1-of-2 from the free throw line. The fourth Green Wave 3-pointer of the opening half made it 23-12 with 11:57, forcing a timeout from the Hurricane.

The run continued as Tulane scored the next seven points before Pritchard finally stopped the bleeding with a jumper in the lane to make it 30-14 with just under 10 to play in the first half. Both teams followed with and-ones as Tulane extended its lead to 19 before Nikita Konstantynovskyi muscled his way to the rim and then knocked down the ensuing free throw.

A 3-pointer with 1:55 on the clock in the first gave Tulane its largest lead of the first half, 50-24. The Golden Hurricane outscored Tulane 7-2 over the final two minutes of the half, including a triple from LaDavius Draine to make the score 52-31 at the half.

Tulsa shot 46 percent in the first half, but Tulane hit 67 percent of its shot and 67 percent of its three-pointers. Tulane also led the first half turnover battle 10-2 and scored 19 points off Tulsa turnovers.

Griffin led the Hurricane with 13 first-half points while Idowu had six. Tulane had two players in double figures with Cook scoring 16 and  Forbes adding 14 points.

The halftime break didn't cool Tulane off as R.J. Mcgee knocked down a three in the corner to give Tulane a 55-31 lead. From there, Tulsa was unable to get the lead under 20, as the Tulane lead hovered between 21 and 27 for the first 10 minutes of the second half.

The Green Wave took an 83-52 lead with 8:29 to play on a Cook layup, but Griffin hit another three to bring it back to 28 points. Idowu hit a pair of free throws before Tulane responded with a quick five points to extend its lead back to 31, 88-57. Tulane eventually pushed its lead to a game-high 34 at 92-58 with 4:26 remaining and would do so again twice more, including a 3-pointer to close out the scoring.
