Tulsa Volleyball Completes Comeback To Win 3-2 Over Tulane

TULSA, Okla. — The University of Tulsa volleyball team fought back from a 2-0 deficit to secure the comeback in a five-set victory (15-25, 18-25, 25-23, 28-26, 15-13) against the Tulane Green Wave (8-19, 3-13 AAC) Sunday at home in the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
 
The victory improved the Golden Hurricane's record to 12-15 overall and 5-10 in AAC play.
 
Three Tulsa players secured double-doubles in the win: outside hitter Kayley Cassaday (20 kills and 11 digs), setter Avery Kalsu (41 assists and 22 digs) and libero Marta Pecalli (21 digs and 12 assists). Cassaday's 20 kills moves her to 450 on the year, while Pecalli's 21 digs eclipsed her past the 500-dig mark (511) this season.
 
Right side hitter Jolana Smidlova had her first breakout game for Hurricane. The freshman from Letovice, Czech Republic, landed a career-high 14 kills in 41 total attacks in the win, making her the second-most active hitter on the day behind Cassaday (69 attacks).
 
Freshman defensive specialist Ryann Thomas also broke out for Tulsa, putting up career-highs in kills (4), attacks (13) and digs (20).
 
"We've struggled with consistency this year, so figuring out how to come back and win three sets in a row was a big deal for us," said senior outside hitter Kayley Cassaday. "It was a big steppingstone in showing our younger players what happens when you play with consistency and poise."
 
Tulsa will return to action for a mid-week match with Wichita State (14-12, 9-6 AAC) on Wednesday, Nov. 16, at 6 p.m.

How It Happened
 
SET 1 | The Hurricane found themselves in an early hole, losing a tough first set 25-15. Tulsa trailed by as many as 10 points as Tulane grabbed the advantage for good at 7-6 in a set that was tied up four times before the Green Wave took control.
 
SET 2 | Tulsa lost set two 25-18, digging a 2-0 deficit in the match. Tulsa trailed by as many as seven points as the Green Wave grabbed the advantage for good at 13-12 in a set that was tied up six times before Tulane took over the lead.
 
SET 3 | After falling in sets one and two, Tulsa fought back to win the third set and made it a 2-1 match. The Hurricane fought from behind to take its first lead late in the set at 24-23 before prevailing in the stanza 25-23.
 
SET 4 | Tulsa continued its comeback, winning the fourth set 28-26 to bring the match level at two sets apiece. The Hurricane came out on top of a tight battle, winning in a stanza that was tied nine times.
 
SET 5 | Tulsa lost the first two sets but put together a furious rally to win the final three sets, culminating in a 15-13 fifth-set victory and 3-2 match victory. The Hurricane endured a back-and-forth final set to emerge victorious in a stanza that featured four lead changes and was tied eight times. Neither team led by more than three points in the set.
