Tulsa Hits the Road to Face No. 3 Baylor, Host Alabama

2/10/2022 10:07:00 AM | Men's Tennis

TULSA, Okla. ― Following its first ranked win of the season, the Tulsa men's tennis team will play on the road tomorrow at No. 3 Baylor in Waco, Texas at 2:00 p.m.

Last Sunday, the Hurricane knocked off No. 18 Pepperdine 4-3 inside the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. Tulsa has won four of its last five matches, the only loss coming to No. 4 TCU at the ITA Kickoff Weekend in Fort Worth, Texas.

The Hurricane earned a couple of honors this week, as Callum Gale was named the American Athletic Conference Player of the Week on Tuesday, and Ezequiel Santalla debuted in the ITA DI Men's Top 125 National Singles Rankings at No. 86 yesterday. Tulsa also started to receive votes in the ITA Coaches Poll for the first time this season.

Tulsa will be making its second road trip of the season to Texas tomorrow. Baylor moved down to No. 3 in yesterday's ITA Rankings after being No. 2 for a couple weeks. The Bears are 9-0 this season and are coming off a 6-1 victory over No. 9 Texas.

Friday's matchup with the Baylor Bears will be the 14th time that the two have squared off since 2006. The Bears hold a 10-3 series advantage since then, including a 5-2 win in 2019.

The action inside the Hawkins Indoor Tennis Center can be streamed at baylorbears.com/sports/2018/9/18/tennis-playsight.aspx and followed along at sidearmstats.com/baylor/mten2/.

Tulsa will then have a quick turnaround when they host Alabama on Sunday, February 13th inside the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The Crimson Tide are scheduled to play at No. 19 Oklahoma on Friday before they take on the Hurricane.

Alabama is 3-4, dropping matches to Ole Miss, Kentucky and Arkansas, but beat UAB 7-0 last Saturday. The Crimson Tide have two doubles teams ranked in the top-50 of the ITA Rankings, and Flip Planinsek is ranked No. 41.

Tulsa and Alabama last met on February 7, 2020, in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide won 6-1. Tulsa will look to extend its three-match home winning streak on Sunday.
