TULSA, Okla. ― Following a two-week hiatus, the Tulsa women's tennis team returned to the courts to open American Athletic Conference play on the plus side following a 6-1 victory over Tulane. Tulsa improves to 6-1 on the season, 1-0 in AAC play while Tulane drops to 3-2 overall, 0-1 in conference play. The win marked the fifth-straight victory at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center for the Golden Hurricane.
"It was a good, tight match, much tighter than the score indicated for sure," head coach Dean Orford said. "We missed a competition last week due to weather, so with two weeks off it took us a little to get going, but once we did, I'm proud of what the girls did and their reaction to it. Good to get our first conference win for sure."
Tulsa won the doubles point for the sixth time this season, as all three Tulsa tandems won. The Hurricane improve to 16-4 this spring in doubles play.
In singles play, Tulsa continued to play well, winning on five of the six courts. After dropping the first set, Laia Conde Monfort, who is ranked No. 94 in the ITA Singles Rankings, bounced back to win the second set as well as the 10-point tiebreaking third set. Shurra Poppe, Lily Hutchings, and Leonor Oliveira all won in straight sets, while Valeryia Rozenkova bounced back to win the second and third set after falling behind. Tulsa has 29 singles victories this spring.
Tulsa will hit the road next week, facing Wichita State in Kansas on Wednesday before heading east about 70 miles to take on Oklahoma State on February 20th.
