Tulsa Falls to Wichita State 72-62

TULSA, Okla. –– Jeriah Horne and Darien Jackson combined for 30 points Wednesday night but the Wichita State Shockers claimed a 72-62 win over Tulsa in front of 3,450 fans at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.

Tulsa dropped to 9-19 overall and 3-14 in the AAC, while Wichita State improved to 14-12 and 5-9 in league action. The Hurricane closes the regular season on Senior Day this Sunday, March 6, at 1 p.m. against the UCF Knights.

Horne and Jackson each had 15 points, LaDavius Draine added 10 points and Rey Idowu had nine, all coming in the first half. Horne also had team-highs of six rebounds and four assists.

The Shockers outrebounded Tulsa 43-19, a season-low for the Hurricane. Tulsa suffered just three turnovers in the contest, while forcing WSU to turn the ball over 11 times. Wichita State ended the game shooting 49-percent from the field and Tulsa had a .412 field goal percentage.

"Obviously, that was a tough one for us. It's hard to win a game when your -24 on the glass. We had it down to three at one point, but we didn't rebound and that really killed us. It really comes down to that," said Tulsa Head Coach Frank Haith.

The final 2:24 of the first half when the Shockers went on a 9-1 run to close the half is what ended up being the difference in the contest. In the second half, WSU outscored Tulsa only by one point, 34-33.

The Shockers extended its nine-point halftime lead to 12 in the first five minutes before the Hurricane, with Jackson leading the way with eight points, cut the WSU lead to three at 53-50 with 9:57 remaining in the contest. WSU scored the next 10 points to extend its lead to 63-50 at the six-minute mark.

Draine's three-pointer ended Tulsa's scoring drought to make the score 63-53 with 5:31 on the clock. WSU built its lead back to 12 points and Tulsa could only get as close as nine points when Sam Griffin knocked in his only field goal of the game, a three-pointer with 1:30 remaining in the contest.

Tulsa jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first three minutes of the game holding the Shockers scoreless until a free throw at the 16:48 mark. Tulsa led 11-6 but went on a scoring drought of 3:05 as Wichita State took its first lead at 13-11 with 11:40 on the clock. Horne's jumper ended the Hurricane drought and evened the score at 13-13.

Tulsa took a 24-23 lead on two Jackson free throws with 5:03 remaining before halftime. WSU retook the lead at 25-24 on a Tyson Etienne floating jumper at the 4:44 mark. The score remained within three points until the 1:35 mark when the Shockers began its run for a nine-point halftime lead.

Wichita State made their last six shots of the half to take a 38-29 lead into the intermission.

Until the final 2:24 it was nearly an even game with five lead changes, five ties and only a difference of 0:05 in time with a lead as Tulsa led for 8:44 and WSU 8:39 in the first half.

Tulsa failed to score from three-point range in the first 20 minutes going 0-for-7, while Wichita State scored 12 points from behind the arc knocking down 4-of-9 treys. The Shockers shot 56-percent from the field and the Hurricane made 41-percent of its field goals. The Hurricane was outrebounded 21-10 but had zero turnovers to WSU's five in the first half.

After Sunday's regular season finale at the Reynolds Center, the American Athletic Conference Championship is up next for the Hurricane. The AAC Championship takes place March 10-13 at Dickies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.
