The Long Ball Disrupts Tulsa in Game One Loss to Wichita State

WICHITA, Kan.
– Wichita State's offensive power was on display as the University of Tulsa softball team fell 10-8 in game one of the series on Friday evening.

The Shockers homered four times, including twice from Lauryn Mills, to account for seven of their runs. Wichita State finished with 10 hits and committed a pair of errors and left seven on base, while Tulsa had an error-free game, eight hits and left eight on the bags.

The Golden Hurricane dropped to 12-20-1 on the season and 1-2-1 in American Athletic Conference play, while Wichita State improved to 18-10 and is now 1-0 in The American.

Samantha Pochop (7-9) was credited with the loss after giving up nine hits and eight runs in 4.1 innings. Makenzie Brown pitched in relief and allowed two runs on a hit with three walks and three strikeouts.

Tulsa chased the Shockers' starter from the game in the second inning, but Caitlin Bingham (8-2) came in and would eventually bring home the win. She allowed five hits and five runs, one earned while striking out four with three walks.

After a scoreless first inning, it was the Golden Hurricane who struck first in the top of the second. TU forced the Wichita State pitching staff to hit their marks, drawing multiple walks and long at-bats. Rylee Keith led off with a walk and a double from Abby Jones put Tulsa in business.

MaKayla Jackson drove in the game's first run with a sacrifice fly to left field. After a sacrifice bunt moved Jones to third, Kennedy Cramer drew a walk and then stole second. She was rewarded with a run as Haley Morgan lifted a line drive over the leaping shortstop into left, scoring two, and Tulsa led 3-0 after one and a half.

Wichita State responded with a pair of runs in the second after a leadoff walk was met with a two-run home run. The Shockers would repeat the feat in the third as a bunt single led the inning, and then a two-run home run immediately followed, and Wichita State held a 4-3 lead.

The lead would only last a half inning as the Hurricane benefited from two Wichita State errors to retake advantage. Jackson reached first safely off an error to lead the inning and was subsequently pinch ran for by Gracie Jarvis. A one-out single put a runner in scoring position, and a two-out walk loaded the bags. Celeste Wood came to the plate and hit a hard ground ball to the second baseman, who let it run between her legs for a two-run error, putting Tulsa up 5-4. Kailyn Bearpaw doubled in the next at-bat, scoring another two and Tulsa went up 7-4.

Wichita State grabbed a run in the bottom of the fourth inning after back-to-back one-out singles and a walk loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly drove in the run to cut Tulsa's lead to two.

WSU retook the lead for good in the bottom of the fifth on back-to-back home runs. Mills hit her second two-run home run of the game to tie it up, and then a solo shot put Wichita State up 8-7 and brought Brown to the circle.

The Shockers added to their lead in the sixth after two walks and a hit batter loaded the bags with one out. A two-out single up the middle scored a pair of runs and Tulsa was in a three-run hole going into the seventh.

TU refused to go down without a fight as Keith drew a leadoff walk and Jones doubled for the second time to put runners in scoring position. A sharply hit line drive was unfortunately right at the third baseman for the first out. Imani Edwards reached on a fielder's choice as Keith took off for home, the throw beat her to the plate, but the catcher didn't realize it was not a force out and Keith slid in safely to cut the lead to 10-8. However, a flyout and groundout left the tying run at first and Wichita State closed out the game.

The Hurricane and Shockers will meet again on Saturday afternoon for the second game of the series. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. and the game will air on ESPN+.
