Tulsa Volleyball Holds Off East Carolina For 3-2 Victory

The University of Tulsa volleyball team knocked off the East Carolina Pirates 3-2 (25-18, 25-21, 21-25, 15-25, 15-6) Friday night at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
 
The first conference victory of the season improved Tulsa's record to 8-5 overall.
 
The Golden Hurricane attack was paced by outside hitter Kayley Cassaday, who finished with 22 kills on the day, and by Bailey Rowe, who had 15.
 
Setter tandem Avery Kalsu and Brayden Hipp each recorded double-doubles in the win. Kalsu had 26 assists and 14 digs while Hipp produced 24 assists and 14 digs.
 
Defensively, Tulsa had four players reach double figures in digs, including 26 by libero Marta Pecalli. Bailey Rowe and middle blocker Rachel Brown each put up three blocks to boost the Tulsa defense.
 
"It felt like two different matches in one," said Head Volleyball Coach Ryan Wills. "In the first two sets, we played super clean and played good volleyball. In the third and fourth set, you have to give East Carolina credit. Offensively, they really challenged us. We reset going into the fifth set, and we found a way to slow down ECU.
 
The Hurricane will resume action on Sunday, Sept. 25, against Temple in the Reynolds Center at 1 p.m.

How It Happened
 
SET 1 | The Hurricane took set one 25-18 propelled by a strong performance on the attacking end. Tulsa registered a .429 attack percentage with 16 kills in the set victory. The Hurricane opened a 21-13 lead in the stanza and coasted to victory from there.
 
SET 2 | Tulsa continued to roll after a set-one win by securing a 25-21 victory in the second set. The Hurricane grabbed the advantage for good at 7-6 in a set that showcased two lead changes before the Hurricane took over the lead. The Tulsa offense also got a boost from three aces in the stanza.
 
SET 3 | Tulsa saw its attempt at a sweep end when East Carolina took set three. The Hurricane fell behind on the first point and fought from behind the rest of the way before losing the set 25-21.
 
SET 4 | Tulsa then dropped the fourth set 25-15 to bring the match level at two sets apiece. The Hurricane trailed by as many as 10 points as East Carolina grabbed the advantage for good at 5-4 and Tulsa could not recover in a set that was knotted up four times before the Pirates took over.
 
SET 5 | Tulsa needed a fifth set to secure victory. After it won the first two sets, East Carolina responded to take the third and fourth sets before the Hurricane finished off its victory with a 15-6 fifth-set win. The Hurricane scored the first point and never looked back in the fifth set to secure the victory. Tulsa held as high as a 10-point lead at 12-2 before closing out the set, totaling nine kills in the process.
