
Tulsa Cruises to 88-61 Win Over New Orleans in Home Opener

TULSA, Okla. –– The Tulsa women (2-0) cruised to an 88-61 win over New Orleans (0-2) Monday afternoon in front of 2,258 fans on Education Day Monday at the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Temira Poindexter scored a career-high 30 points and Delanie Crawford added 22 for the Hurricane effort. Hadley Periman grabbed a career-best 12 rebounds. Poindexter finished the game 12-of-17 from the field, 3-of-7 from behind the arc and 3-of-3 from the charity stripe.
"I really felt like it was our defensive stops that opened the game wide open," said Head Coach Angie Nelp. "We were down in boards at halftime, and we knew coming out after the break we would want to try to get them to take tough shots. Our defense held them to 26% shooting which was huge. That was really the key to our run in the third quarter offensively. We were able to get out and go on a run and it was our defense that sparked it."
After a paultry first quarter shooting performance at 26 percent, the Hurricane rebounded to finish the game at 47.5 percent from the field, 36 percent from three-point range and 82.6 percent from the free throw line.
Tulsa took control of the game in the third quarter, outscoring the Privateers 29-14, expanding a five-point halftime lead to 20 points after three periods. The Hurricane led by as many as 35 points at the 5:10 mark of the final quarter when Katelynn Levings knocked down a mid-level jumper.
In the second half, Tulsa put up 56 points to New Orleans 36 as the Hurricane converted 58 percent of its field goals, 42 percent from three-point range and 94 percent from the charity stripe.
HOW IT HAPPENED
IN THE FIRST QUARTER . . .
Tulsa jumped out to a 9-0 lead with six of those points coming from Temira Poindexter and a 3-pointer by Hadley Periman, her first of the young season.
The Privateers equaled Tulsa's 9-0 run with a 9-0 run of its own to tie the score at 9-9 at the 3:14 mark of the period.
The Hurricane went 5:11 without a basket until Poindexter's driving layup made the score 11-9. The quarter ended with Tulsa ahead 12-9.
The two teams each shot less than 30-percent in the first quarter, New Orleans at 20% and Tulsa at 27%.
IN THE SECOND QUARTER . . .
Tulsa took its lead to six points, 15-9, before New Orleans tied it at 17 nearly two minutes later.
The Hurricane led by six two more times in the quarter before ending the half with a five-point lead at 30-25.
For the half, UNO was 0-of-8 from 3-point range, while Tulsa was 4-of-13 for 31-percent from behind the arc.
IN THE THIRD QUARTER . . .
Tulsa pulled away in the third quarter outscoring the Privateers by 15 points for a 59-39 lead heading into the final stanza.
In the final three minutes of the period Tulsa went on a 13-2 run to finish the quarter with a 29-14 edge in scoring for the quarter
The 20-point margin at the end of the period was the largest lead for the quarter.
Poindexter had 14 in the period, while Delanie Crawford and Hadley Periman each added seven points.
Tulsa shot 53% for the quarter, while holding New Orleans to 26%.
IN THE FOURTH QUARTER . . .
Tulsa started the quarter ahead by 20 points and went on a 19-4 run in the first 4:50 to take its biggest lead of the game at 78-43.
Crawford led the way in the fourth period with 10 points, while Mady Cartwright added five points and Lexie Foutch four.
Tulsa shot 66% from the field on 8-of-12 field goals and was 9-of-10 from the free throw line for the quarter.
GAME NOTES
• This was the fourth meeting between Tulsa and New Orleans, as the series now stands at 2-1.
• Junior Temira Poindexter had her 47th career double-figure scoring game and her 17th game with 20+ points … it was her first 30-point career scoring game.
• Poindexter had double-digit points in the first half for the second straight game … she had 15 at Lindenwood and tallied 16 points today in the first 20 minutes.
• Junior Delanie Crawford had her 28th career double-figure scoring game with 22 points
• Sophomore Hadley Periman had a career-high in rebounding with 12 boards, breaking her previous high of 11 rebounds last December against Lindenwood.
• Tulsa moved to 2-0 on the season for the third straight year … it's the first time Tulsa has had 2-0 starts in three consecutive seasons since the 2003-04 through 206-07 seasons.
