TULSA, Okla. ––
Mady Cartwright's 15 points led Tulsa to a 65-53 win Sunday afternoon over Northwestern State in front of 1,003 fans at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. The victory was Tulsa's second in the last two days and third in the first week of the season.

Tulsa improved to 3-0 for just the fourth time in school history, while the Lady Demons fell to 0-3 on the season.

The Hurricane freshman came out and hit her first four treys of the game in the first quarter to end the period with 12 points. Cartwright ended the game 5-of-8 from behind the arc and grabbed five rebounds to go along with her team-high 15 points.

Temira Poindexter and Katia Gallegos added 12 and 10 points, respectively, while Hadley Periman led the Hurricane on the boards with her second straight double-digit rebounding game with 10.

"I'm very proud of our girls today," said Head Coach Angie Nelp. "For playing a second game in three days, you have to be ready to go with energy and I felt like our team did that and prepared well. I thought the way we ran the ball offensively and the way we scored in the first quarter reflected our readiness for today. I would have liked to have seen things go just a bit differently in the second and third quarters. We need to be able to handle penetration a bit better defensively and get some stops and get some better scoring opportunities for us. But in the end, we finished the game just like we started. I'm proud of our team and the way they fought in battle today.

"Northwestern State had a good game defensively and they really got us into some foul trouble early. We did face some challenges today. We're happy we won the game and we're always learning lessons."

Tulsa came out in the first quarter and built a 13-point lead after one period, 22-9, but from there on out the Northwestern State Lady Demons battled to keep the game from getting out-of-hand for the remaining three

NW State outscored Tulsa in the second quarter 16-13 and trailed at halftime by just 10 points, 35-25

The Hurricane led by 15 after three periods of play, 57-42, as Poindexter led the way in the quarter with eight points. Tulsa took its largest lead of the game in the fin al stanza at 20 points before the final score ended as a 12-point win.
