TULSA, Okla. ––
With Tulsa's lead down to four and six minutes to play, the Golden Hurricane used a 17-4 run to help close out an 85-71 victory over Incarnate Word on Saturday afternoon in the Donald W. Reynolds Center.

Tulsa improves to 2-0 on the season and 2-0 at home, while the Cardinals fall to 0-2.

Three TU players finished in double-figures, led by a career-high tying 27 points from graduate Cobe Williams. Williams added a team-high six assists and two steals. Isaiah Barnes and PJ Haggerty each improved on their opening night totals with 16 and 15 points apiece. Barnes also pulled down 10 rebounds to notch the first double-double of his young career.

Josiah Hammons paced three Cardinals who scored double figures with 22 points. Sky Wicks added 15 points and Shon Robinson recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 boards.

"First, we were concerned about this game after watching Incarnate Word in their previous game," Tulsa head coach Eric Konkol said. "We knew we had a team coming in here who plays really, really hard. And that's what we saw today. I thought they competed, and what they did on the glass was impressive but also something that I was disappointed in – the way that we gave up all those rebounds.

"We took some punches early. They came out really aggressive and we then had to adjust. We prefer it be the opposite way. But our guys did adjust and played a much cleaner second half offensively. I was pleased that we took care of the basketball as good as we have all season, even in our scrimmages and exhibitions. We had some really nice contributions from a number of guys. So, this was a very good win for us."

Tulsa shot 41 percent from the field and 39 percent from 3-point range, while holding the Cardinals to 29 percent from the floor and 27 from deep.

HOW IT HAPPENED
IN THE FIRST HALF . . .
Barnes connected from deep to open the scoring just 21 seconds into the game.

Incarnate Word tied the game at four on a pair of free throws from Sky Wicks. Wicks then was good from long range to give the Cardinals their first lead, 7-6, with 17:09 remaining in the half. That was the first time the Golden Hurricane had trailed this season.

Wicks picked up his second foul on the next Tulsa possession, sending Barnes to the line and himself to the bench for the majority of the first half. Barnes split a pair of free throws to tie the game, and then UIW scored five-straight to take a 12-7 lead. The five-point advantage would equal the largest lead of the night for the visitors, a lead it would hold twice, including 20-15 with 9:01 remaining in the half.

Over the next two minutes, Tulsa went on a 9-0 with five points from Cobe Williams and four from Haggerty to give Tulsa a 24-20 lead. Incarnate Word would tie the game at 29-29 and 31-all but would never retake the lead in the ballgame.

Tulsa connected on three out of six free throws over the final 1:34 of the half to take a 34-31 lead to the break.

Cobe Williams and Barnes paced Tulsa with 10 points each in the opening frame, while UIW's Josiah Hammons scored 11 to lead all scorers. Barnes pulled down five rebounds. Both teams struggled from the field in the opening half. Tulsa knocked down 28.6 percent (8-28) of its shots, while the Cardinals were just 10-36 (27.8 percent) from the field.

IN THE SECOND HALF . . .
Incarnate Word knocked down a triple to tie the game at 34 right out of the break. But Barnes and Cobe responded with 3-pointers of their own to quickly give Tulsa its then largest lead of the afternoon.

The visitors would not give up, cutting Tulsa's lead back to one, 40-39 at the 17-minute mark, but that was as close as they'd get. The Hurricane outscored Incarnate Word 19-6 in the next 5:11 to take a commanding 59-45 lead with just under 12 minutes left.

Tulsa's lead hovered around 10 until Incarnate Word made one final push and cut the lead to four, 67-63, after a Wicks and-one with six minutes remaining.

A Reed layup and 3-pointer from Cobe Williams put Tulsa up nine. After a free throw from UIW cut the lead to eight, a three-play sequence from the Golden Hurricane flipped the momentum completely in TU's favor.

It started with a dunk from Carlous Williams. The forward beat his man off the dribble before throwing down a thunderous one-handed jam to put Tulsa up 10 with under four minutes to play. The Cardinals tried to get a quick bucket the other way, but the other Williams, Cobe, jumped to meet Josiah Hammons and sent his layup away with an emphatic block. Barnes corralled the rebound and then found Cobe on the other side. After pump faking a defender to create a shot, he buried the triple to put Tulsa back up 13, 77-64, with 3:39 left to play.

Tulsa pushed the lead to a game-high 17 on two occasions in the final minute before a 3-pointer with :13 left on the clock ended scoring at 85-71.

The Hurricane shooting was night and day from the first half, knocking down 51.6 percent (16-31) of its shots in the final 20 minutes. The Hurricane also went 7-15 (46.7 percent) from deep in the second half, while holding Incarnate Word to 29.3 percent (12-41) from the floor and 23.5 percent (4-17) from 3-point range.
