TULSA, Okla. –– The Tulsa women's basketball team will open the 2023-24 season Monday night on the road at Lindenwood University in St. Charles, Mo., with a 6 p.m. tipoff at Hyland Arena.
Tulsa is coming off its second consecutive 17-win season and returns three starters and 10 letterwinners.
The Hurricane and Lindenwood met a year ago as Tulsa captured a 79-46 home victory. Lindenwood finished the season with two wins, but revamped its roster with 12 newcomers under first-year Head Coach Amy Eagan.
Tulsa enters the season with the return of its top two scorers, juniors Temira Poindexter and Delanie Crawford, both Oklahoma high school products. Poindexter, from nearby Sapulpa, averaged a team-leading 16.1 points and 5.4 rebounds, while becoming a first-team American Athletic Conference performer after picking up AAC Freshman of the Year and all-freshman team accolades a year earlier.
Poindexter was named to the preseason-all-conference team as selected by the league's coaches.
From Piedmont, Crawford ranked behind Poindexter with an 11.1 scoring average, while totaling a team-high 90 assists. Crawford was also an AAC all-freshman team selection in 2021-22.
Last year, Tulsa was off to an impressive 15-3 record when injuries sidelined three of the top eight Golden Hurricane players, thus taking away 21.4 points and 14 rebounds from the lineup. Jessika Evans missed 19 games, Katelyn Levings 16 and Ahrray Young 10. All three players will return to the roster this season.
Now sophomores, Caroline Lyles, Hadley Periman and Cam Mathews saw their minutes jump due to last year's injuries, while junior newcomer Katia Gallegos also played an important role down the stretch after missing 10 of the first 14 games. The quartet played some big minutes and showed moments of brilliance on the court.
In all, Tulsa returns 69.8 percent of its minutes and 68.7 percent of its scoring from a year ago.
Tulsa also welcomes five newcomers to fill any holes in the Hurricane lineup with senior transfer Caranda Perea, junior transfer Amira Young and freshman Mady Cartwright, Elise Hill and Queen Ikhiuwu.
