TULSA, Okla. –– The University of Tulsa is hosting a doubleheader on Tuesday with the men set to face Loyola Chicago as the second game in the Donald W. Reynolds Center.
Tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. and will air on ESPN+ with Chad McKee and Pooh Williamson bringing fans the action, and Michelle Montaine as the sideline reporter. Tulsa fans can also catch the game on Big Country 99.5 FM and the Varsity Network app. Bruce Howard and JR Rollo have the call.
Tulsa will celebrate Indigenous Heritage Day on Tuesday with T-shirts for the first 1,000 fans. There is also a Salvation Army Toy Drive, and fans are encouraged to bring new toys to donate. The Tulsa women will start the doubleheader at 5 p.m. against Central Arkansas.
The Golden Hurricane is looking to get back in the win column after a pair of road losses and a 4-2 start to the season. Tulsa was tripped up in its most recent game at ORU on Saturday in the Mayor's Cup, falling 79-70.
An 11-0 run with the game tied at 60 helped the hosts pull away. PJ Haggerty led Tulsa with 17. Cobe Williams added 14 and Keaston Willis scored 10 in his season debut, making his first appearance after an injury sidelined him for the opening five games.
Loyola Chicago holds a 5-3 record in the early season and carries a three-game winning streak into Tuesday's contest. The Ramblers defeated Boston College in a neutral site game, and then took care of Chicago State and Harvard at home. The matchup with Tulsa is Loyola's first true road test with the Ramblers going 4-1 at home and 1-2 in neutral site games this season.
Des Watson leads the team in scoring, averaging 14.0 points per game while shooting 45.9 percent from the floor, 47.2 percent on 3-pointers and 70.8 percent at the line. Philip Alston is the team's second leading scorer, averaging 11.8 points per game, but has missed four games this season due to injury. Alston is one of six returners who faced Tulsa a year ago. He was the team's leader with 18 points and added six rebounds.
Tulsa and Loyola Chicago have played each other three times with the Ramblers holding a 2-1 series lead. However, Tulsa and Loyola met in the Myrtle Beach Invitational a season ago, with the Hurricane winning comfortably 85-66. That was the first meeting between the two teams in 57 years.
Tulsa scored 55 points in the second half to pull away. For the game, the Hurricane shot 48 percent on field goals, 46 percent from deep and 85 percent at the foul line. Sam Griffin scored 20 to pace Tulsa, with Brandon Betson scoring 18 and Tim Dalger adding 17 and nine rebounds.
Following Tuesday's game, Tulsa heads to Oklahoma City for a neutral site game with Oklahoma State at the Paycom Center as part of the Battleground 2k. Tipoff is set for 5:30 p.m. and will air on ESPN2.
