Tulsa Unable to Close Out at Purdue

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. — The University of Tulsa women's tennis team came close but fell short 4-3 against the Purdue Boilermakers (6-0) Sunday in West Lafayette.

The loss drops the Golden Hurricane to 5-3 on the year.

Tulsa came out strong to start the match, winning the doubles point off the efforts of Maria Berlanga Bandera and Lily Hutchings at the No. 1 position and Laia Conde Monfort and Ana Naranjo Martinez at the No. 2 spot.

In singles play, Bandera extended TU's lead to 2-1 when she took down Purdue's Carmen Gallardo Guevara in straight sets at the No. 2 position. The Boilermakers responded with wins at the No. 3 and No. 5 spots to take a 3-2 lead over the Hurricane.

Monfort followed up by winning 7-5, 5-7, 6-1 at singles No. 1 over Carmen Guevara to tie the score at 3-3. The dual match came down to Singles No. 4, where Myroslava Zelenchuk lost a three-set heartbreaker that required two separate tiebreaker sets, resulting in the 4-3 loss for the Hurricane.

Tulsa returns to the Michael D. Case Tennis Center on Saturday, Feb. 11, to host Kansas State (1-5) at 1 p.m.
