Tulsa Falls Short 4-3 to San Diego State

SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The University of Tulsa women's tennis team lost 4-3 Sunday to the San Diego State Aztecs (6-4) at the Aztec Tennis Center in San Diego.

The loss drops the Golden Hurricane to 9-6 on the year.

The doubles point came down to the No. 2 position after TU's Maria Berlanga Bandera and Lily Hutchings won the No. 1 spot 6-3, followed by Amy Leather and Myroslava Zelenchuk's 6-3 loss at No. 3 Doubles. Laia Conde Monfort and Ana Naranjo Martinez came through for the Hurricane, prevailing 7-5 to earn TU's first point of the match.

Tulsa and San Diego State entered a back-and-forth shootout in singles play. Kickstarting the scoring was Naranjo with a 6-2, 6-3 win at the No. 5 position to put the Hurricane up 2-0. SDSU's Dariya Detkovskaya quickly answered back at the No. 3 spot to cut into Tulsa's lead.

The Aztecs rattled off back-to-back straight set wins at the No. 1 and No. 4 positions to go up 3-2 on Tulsa. Berlanga tied it back up with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 win over Tamara Arnold at No. 2 Singles.

The fate of the dual match came down to Lian Benedejcic and Cecile Morin in the sixth position. Benedejcic won the first set 6-3 but could not keep the momentum, falling 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 to seal the 4-3 loss for Tulsa.

TU stays in San Diego to take on the No. 37 San Diego Toreros (4-5) on Tuesday, March 14, at 3:30 p.m.
