TULSA, Okla. — The University of Tulsa women's tennis team dominated the Abilene Christian Wildcats (6-7) Saturday on the way to a 7-0 sweep at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.
Â
In their first home outdoor match of the spring season, the Golden Hurricane women earned a second-straight win to improve to 9-5.
Â
The doubles point went to the Hurricane thanks to a 6-1 victory by Laia Conde Monfort and Ana Naranjo Martinez at the No. 2 position, followed by a 6-3 decision by Maria Berlanga Bandera and Lily Hutchings in the No. 1 spot.
Â
In singles play, all TU athletes in the lineup needed only two sets to conquer their Wildcat opponents. Kicking off the scoring was senior Lian Benedejcic, who, after dropping the first game point against ACU's Andrea Gurerro at the No. 5 position, went on a 12-0 run to win 6-1, 6-0 and put Tulsa up 2-0.
Senior Laia Conde Monfort followed up with a 6-3, 6-0 decision over Masha Vrsalovic at the No. 1 position. Monfort took the lead at 4-3 in the first set and did not drop a single game point on the way to her two-set victory.
Â
Clinching the dual match victory at 4-0 for Tulsa was sophomore Lily Hutchings, who added a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 3 Singles. Hutchings moves to 14-6 on the year and 6-4 in the dual match season.
Â
After the teams elected to play on, sophomore Ana Naranjo Martinez moved the Hurricane to 5-0 when she took down the Wildcats' Maria Cascos 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 4 position. Like Monfort at the No. 1 spot, Martinez broke the set-one tie at 4-3 and did not look back to go on an 8-0 run to close out her match.
Â
Junior Oleksandra Nahurska made her first appearance since the Hurricane Invite last November. After taking time off for injury, Nahurska came out with a convincing victory over Eva Arranz at the No. 6 position. In the first set, Nahurska prevailed 7-5 in a stanza where neither athlete led by more than two game points. In the second set, Nahurska dropped the first game point before going on a 6-0 run to close out her head-to-head match 7-5, 6-1.
Â
Wrapping up the 7-0 sweep for the Hurricane was Maria Berlanga Bandera at the No. 2 spot. After winning the first set 6-4, Berlanga fought to a 6-6 tie in the second stanza with ACU's Olivia Sears. In the tiebreaker set, Berlanga prevailed 7-5 to close out 6-4, 7-6(5) and ended the action for the Hurricane.
