
Tulsa Drops 2-1 Decision to #19/21 Wichita State on Senior Day

TULSA, Okla. – The University of Tulsa softball team went toe-to-toe with the No. 19/21 Shockers on Sunday but ultimately came up short 2-1 on Senior Day at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
With the win, Wichita State (43-8, 16-2 The American) completed the series sweep and ensured WSU will not have to share the conference championship with UCF. Tulsa (20-26, 6-9 The American) is in a tie for fourth place in the conference with Houston. The Golden Hurricane will close league play at East Carolina next weekend.
Maura Moore (11-12) earned the start and the loss, but had a fantastic game in the circle. The sophomore tossed 6.2 innings and allowed two runs on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts. She had a no-hitter working through the first five innings before Wichita State broke through. Kylee Nash came in to face a batter and got out of the top of the seventh.
A trio of pitchers featured for the Shockers on Sunday. Lauren Howell (18-2) pitched the fifth, sixth and seventh innings and collected the win. She allowed a walk and one hit while facing 12 batters.
Kailyn Bearpaw had a pair of hits, including an RBI single in the first. MacKenzie Denson also had a two-hit day. Claira Skaggs and Imani Edwards each had a hit, and Edwards scored the team's only run.
Wichita State was held hitless until the fifth. A leadoff single broke up the no-hit bid, but Hayley Morgan and Abby Jones connected to nail the runner as she attempted to stretch the hit to a double. Two bunt singles and a a single to center tied the game. After a flyout, Wichita State drove in the winning run on a single to center.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Golden Hurricane took the early lead in the final contest thanks to a pair of back-to-back two-out singles. Edwards reached on a fielder's choice to put a runner on for Skaggs. The sophomore third baseman singled to left center as Edwards moved from first to third. Bearpaw got Tulsa on the board with a hard-hit groundball that got through the left side.
Runners left on base was the story of afternoon for the Hurricane as Tulsa left the bags loaded in the second and fifth innings. In both frames, TU had two opportunities, but was unable to push an insurance run across home.
Moore kept the Shockers off the bags save for an error in the first inning and a walk in the third. However, Wichita State finally broke through in the sixth, flipping the score.

The batter tried to stretch her single to a double, but Morgan was alert and got the ball quickly into the second baseman, Jones, who supplied the tag and got the out.
