1/12/2024 11:21:00 AM | Men's Tennis
TULSA, Okla. — The tradition of playing top teams is no different this year for the Tulsa Golden Hurricane men's tennis team. Tulsa will face 12 teams that advanced to the NCAA Championships a year ago, while four opponents come into the 2024 campaign with a preseason top-25 ranking.
The men will open the 2024 spring dual match season at home in the Michael D. Case Tennis Center with a double-header on Friday, Jan. 19. The Hurricane will take on cross-town rival Oral Roberts (0-0) at 10 a.m. and end the day against Illinois State (0-0) at 6 p.m.
The annual meeting with ORU returns to the Case Tennis Center for a third consecutive year. Tulsa is undefeated against Oral Roberts this century (26 matches) and hasn't given up more than two team points along the way. The Hurricane has held the Golden Eagles scoreless in the last six matchups dating back to the 2019.
Tulsa and Illinois State meet for the first time since 2022, when Tulsa earned a 7-0 sweep over the Redbirds at home. The last six matchups have been played at the Case Tennis Center, with the Hurricane winning all by four or more points.
Six of Tulsa's 10 team members are new to the Golden Hurricane roster this season.
In the fall, freshman Alex Okonkwo, from England, posted a 6-2 record to lead the Hurricane, while fellow freshman Victor Tosetto, from Brazil, turned in a 7-4 mark. A win over the country's then-80th-ranked singles player in his first career match the Case Tennis Center helped earn Okonkwo a No. 74 ranking heading into dual-match play. In doubles action, Texas A&M transfer Pierce Rollins and sophomore Timothy Carlsson Seger posted a 5-2 record as doubles partners to pace the Hurricane.
