TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa men's tennis team started their spring season with a bang by grabbing a pair of perfect 7-0 sweeps over the cross-town rival Oral Roberts Golden Eagles and the Illinois State Redbirds Friday in the Michael D. Case Tennis Center.

Against ORU, the Golden Hurricane rattled off three straight doubles wins by scores of 6-2 to secure the doubles point. It was the graduate transfer duo of Pierce Rollins and Thiago Pernas who clinched the opening team score for Tulsa at the top of the doubles lineup.

Each of the six TU athletes in singles play needed only two sets to conquer their ORU counterparts. Freshman Victor Tosetto was the first to finish at the No. 5 position in perfect 6-0, 6-0 fashion. Redshirt freshman Gus Tettamble (6-0, 6-1) took care of business at the No. 6 spot before Rollins clinched Tulsa's 27th straight team win over Oral Roberts this century with a 6-1, 6-1 decision at the top of the lineup.

After electing to play on, senior Volodymyr Zakharov (6-2, 6-3) and Callum Gale (6-3, 6-2) scored for Tulsa in the No. 4 and No. 3 positions, respectfully, before Pernas won 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 2 spot to close out the match.

In the nightcap against Illinois State, doubles wins by Rollins and Pernas (6-1) in the first position, followed by Tettamble and Tosetto (6-2) in the third position locked up the opening score for TU. Senior Callum Gale and freshman Alex Okonkwo wrapped up doubles play for the day with a 6-4 finish at Doubles No. 2.

Tulsa continued to score with straight-set victories in singles play. Rollins opened the scoring atop the lineup with his second 6-1, 6-1 performance of the day. Following a win by Tosetto (6-2, 6-2) in the No. 5 position, Tettamble grabbed his first career team clinch in the sixth spot by a score of 6-3, 6-2.

Playing on in singles play, Gale and Zakharov picked up wins in the third and fourth positions before Pernas ended the night with a 6-2, 7-6(4) finish at the No. 2 position.

Tulsa will be back in action in the ITA Kick-Off Weekend, slated for Jan. 27-28. The Hurricane will take on Princeton (1-1) and either No. 4 TCU (0-0) or Rice (2-0) in a four-team bracket hosted by the Horned Frogs in Fort Worth, Texas.
