FORTH WORTH, Texas — True freshman Victor Tosetto won a back-and-forth three-set battle at Singles No. 6 to help Tulsa prevail 4-3 over a tough Princeton squad (1-3) Saturday in the Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center on the TCU campus. The Golden Hurricane (3-0) advances to the championship round of the TCU pod and will face either the nation's fifth-ranked Horned Frogs (1-0) or Rice (3-0) tomorrow at 2 p.m.
Tulsa benefitted from two of three doubles wins to grab the crucial 1-0 advantage to start the day. After the Hurricane dropped the first position 6-4, Callum Gale and Alex Okonkwo grabbed a win in the No. 2 position, followed by a Gus Tettamble and Victor Tosetto victory in the No. 3 spot to secure the doubles point. Both Tulsa duos won their matches 7-5.
The Tigers retaliated in singles play, taking the No. 3 and 4 positions in straight sets to take a 2-1 lead over Tulsa.
At Singles No. 2, senior Thiago Pernas tied up the dual match at two points all when he dismantled Princeton's Fnu Nidunjianzan in two sets, 6-3, 7-5. Pernas moves to a perfect 3-0 on the year in singles play with all his wins coming at the No. 2 position.
After Princeton took the lead again at 3-2 with a win in the fifth position, senior Pierce Rollins came through with the equalizer victory at Singles No. 1 to even the dual match at 3-3. Rollins dropped the first set 6-1 before taking the next two sets by scores of 7-5 and 6-1 to claim his third straight win atop the lineup.
It all came down to true freshman Victor Tosetto in the No. 6 position. Due to TCU's Bayard H. Friedman Tennis Center housing only five indoor courts, Tosetto had to wait for an opening before starting his match. In the first set, he took control at 2-1 and never looked back on the way to a 6-4 finish. His opponent, Evan Wen, responded in the second set 6-1 to force a third stanza.
Tosetto never trailed in what was a decisive third and final set that ended in the Porto Alegre's favor 6-3 to seal Tulsa's 4-3 victory over Princeton.
Tulsa will face either Rice or No. 5 TCU tomorrow in the championship match at 2 p.m.
