Tulsa Men Fall 4-0 to #5 TCU in Championship Match of ITA Kickoff Weekend

FORT WORTH, Texas — The Tulsa men's tennis team started the day looking to earn a spot in the ITA National Indoor Championships, but the nation's fifth-ranked TCU Horned Frogs were too much to overcome as the Golden Hurricane fell 4-0 Sunday in the championship match of the four-team TCU bracket in Fort Worth. Tulsa fell to 3-1 on the year while the 3-0 Frogs advanced to the indoor championship in New York City.

The Frogs came out swinging in doubles play, grabbing a 6-1 decision in the No. 2 position and a 6-2 finish in the No. 3 spot to grab the initial 1-0 advantage, leaving seniors Pierce Rollins and Thiago Pernas' match atop the lineup unfinished at three games to four.

Tulsa would face four top-125 athletes in singles action. TCU extended its lead to 3-0 with two-set wins in the top two spots in the lineup. The dual match was clinched at 4-0 for the Horned Frogs when Lui Maxted, ranked No. 64 in the country, escaped Callum Gale 7-6, 6-3 in the No. 4 position to seal the day. Alex Okonkwo (6-7, 2-4), Volodymyr Zakharov (0-3) and Timothy Carlsson Seger (no score) left their matches unfinished in positions three, five and six, respectively.

Tulsa returns home to the Michael D. Case Tennis Center to host the Oklahoma Sooners (5-1) for an exciting in-state matchup on Sunday, Feb. 4, at 1 p.m.
