TULSA, Okla. — The Tulsa men's tennis team fought valiantly across all positions of play but fell 5-2 Sunday to the Oklahoma Sooners in the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The Golden Hurricane dropped to 3-2, while the Sooners improved to 7-1.

The doubles point came down to the third position after OU took the No. 2 position 6-3 and senior duo Thiago Pernas and Pierce Rollins claimed the No. 1 spot 6-4. It would be Oklahoma's Luis Alvarez and Jordan Hasson who prevailed 6-4 in a back-and-forth set over sophomore Timothy Carlsson Seger and redshirt freshman Gus Tettamble to secure the 1-0 lead.

Oklahoma extended its lead over Tulsa to three after taking the No. 2 and 3 singles spots in straight sets.

Sealing TU's loss at 4-0 was the Sooners' Mark Mandlik in the sixth position against freshman Victor Tosetto. Tosetto erased a 3-0 deficit in the first set to finish 6-4 and claim a set advantage over Mandlik. Then in the second frame, Mandlik took control at 3-2 and never looked back on the way to a 6-3 finish to knot up the match at two sets all. In the final stanza, Mandlik would cruise to a 6-0 victory to seal No. 6 singles for OU and the team victory.

Electing to play on, Seger put Tulsa on the board with his first career win over a ranked opponent, when he took down No. 89 Luis Alvarez 6-2, 7-6(5) in the fifth position. In the first set, Alvarez scored the first two game points before Seger rattled off six in a row to win the first frame 6-2. Then in the second set, neither player led by more than two as Alvarez forced a tiebreaker set at six games all. In the tiebreaker, Seger prevailed 7-5 to score Tulsa's first team point.

Moving the team score to 4-2 was senior Callum Gale in the No. 4 position when he battled to back-to-back 7-6(5) tiebreaker wins over Just Schlageter. Neither player led by more than two game points in both sets with Schlageter forcing the tiebreakers in each frame. In the first tiebreaker, Gale broke the deadlock at 5-5 and cruised to the first 7-5 finish. In the following tiebreaker set to potentially win his match, he took control at 4-3 and rode to the second 7-5 finish to seal the No. 4 position for TU.

The dual match ended at 5-2 when No. 91 Alex Martinez of the Sooners took down Rollins 7-6(8), 5-7, [10-7] atop the singles lineup.

Tulsa remains home to host Princeton (3-3) Friday, Feb. 9, in a rematch from last week's 4-3 Hurricane victory over the Tigers during ITA Kickoff Weekend. First serves are slated for 6 p.m.
