Tulsa Men Host Princeton for Rematch, Face Baylor in Waco

2/8/2024 6:44:00 PM | Men's Tennis

TULSA, Okla. — A pair of dual matches are on deck for the Tulsa men's tennis team, who are coming off a competitive 5-2 setback to Oklahoma. First, the 3-2 Golden Hurricane will host the Princeton Tigers (4-3) in a rematch from their matchup two weeks ago at ITA Kickoff Weekend on Friday, Feb. 9, at 6 p.m. following the women's home contest against Tulane. Then, TU will hit the road for Waco, Texas, for a dual match with the Baylor Bears (6-1) Sunday, Feb. 11, at noon.

This is the third meeting between Tulsa and Princeton and the second this season. Tulsa tied up the series at one win apiece when the Golden Hurricane took down the Tigers in a 4-3 thriller on Jan. 27, during ITA Kickoff Weekend. The first meeting ended in a 6-3 decision for Princeton in 1987 at a neutral site.

Since falling to Tulsa—a loss that dropped the Tigers to 1-3—Princeton has won its last three dual matches, including a 4-0 sweep over Rice, a 6-1 winner at home over Liberty and a 7-0 home sweep against Drexel.

Paul Inchauspe stands as Princeton's lone ranked singles player at No. 69 in the latest ITA poll. Heading into Friday's match, he is 14-6 overall and 4-2 this spring across the top two singles spots.

Tulsa and Baylor meet for the 17th overall meeting in a series that dates back to 1987. Baylor has taken the last six matches, including last year's contest in Tulsa in a 4-2 decision. Tulsa's last win over the Bears came down to the wire in a 4-3 victory on March 24, 2016.

Ranked as high as No. 24 in the Jan. 31 ITA team poll, Baylor is 6-1 on the young season with its only loss coming in a 4-2 defeat at No. 13 Arizona. Last time out, the Bears took down Jacksonville State, 6-1, and Nebraska, 7-0, in a home doubleheader on Saturday.

Baylor features two ranked singles players on their roster, including No. 29 Tadeas Paroulek and No. 107 Devin Badenhorst. Paroulek is 4-4 so far against nationally ranked opponents this year and 3-2 from the No. 1 position, while Badenhorst is a 5-0 across positions 2-3 to start his 2024 campaign.

Paroulek and teammate Zsombor Velcz form Baylor's premiere doubles tandem with a 5-4 overall record and a 4-1 mark from the No. 1 spot.
