Mustangs Outrun Golden Hurricane

DALLAS, Texas –– The University of Tulsa men's basketball team fell behind early and could not find its way back into the game in a 103-70 loss at SMU on Saturday afternoon in Moody Coliseum.  
 
With the loss, TU drops to 10-8 and 1-5 in the American Athletic Conference. The Mustangs improve 13-5 and 4-1 in AAC play.
 
Freshman PJ Haggerty led Tulsa with 19 points, scoring in double figures for the 17th time this season and falling one point shy of his 10th 20-point game. Jared Garcia added 15 points to go alongside a team-best nine rebounds. Cobe Williams added 12 points with five assists and a pair of steals, while Tyshawn Archie scored 11 and assisted on four baskets.
 
SMu had four reach double figures in scoring, led by 18 apiece from Zhuric Phelps and Chuck Harris. Samuell Williamson added 15 and Jalen Smith scored 12.
 
The Hurricane shot 41.9 percent from the floor and 25.9 (7-of-27) on 3-pointers, while the Mustangs were 51.4 percent (36-of-70) on field goals and 42.9 percent (12-of-28) from deep. SMU held a 41-33 advantage on the glass and 42-34 lead in points in the paint, but it was turnovers and fastbreak points that made the big difference. Tulsa turned it over 18 times, leading to 23 points for the Mustangs, while SMU only turned it over 10 times and Tulsa scored just six points. On fastbreaks, SMU outscored the Hurricane 27-12.
 
SMU also had an advantage at the foul line, knocking down 19-of-27 (70.4 percent) attempts, while Tulsa went 11-of-14 (78.6 percent) at the charity stripe.
 
HOW IT HAPPENED
IN THE FIRST HALF . . .
The Mustangs opened the game on an 14-2 run. Tulsa missed its first four shots before an offensive rebound allowed Cobe Williams to get a layup off a Carlous Williams assist to make it 7-2. But SMU got another triple to fall and then a layup as the teams entered the first media timeout with the Mustangs leading 12-2.
 
Haggerty knocked down Tulsa's first triple of the afternoon and Tyshawn Archie buried a jumper in the corner to get Tulsa within nine, 16-7. But Tulsa struggled to slow down SMU. The Mustangs had four offensive rebounds in the opening eight minutes, which included a second chance layup to push the lead to 20-7 and force a Tulsa timeout.
 
The Hurricane went on a mini run to get back in the ball game, starting with an and one from Jared Garcia, who fought through a foul to get the basket and then converted at the line. Following a pair of SMU free throws, Garcia got to the basket again, and then Archie connected from well-beyond the 3-point line to get Tulsa back within 22-15 with 11:04 to play.
 
But just as quickly as Tulsa got it close, SMU expanded its lead again, scoring six straight over the next two minutes to get the lead back to 13. Tulsa was not able to get the score any closer than 13 the rest of the half. Garcia connected on another three to get Tulsa back within 13 for the final time, 42-29 with 3:46 in the half. SMU then got a layup and back-to-back 3-pointers for a quick 8-0 run to grab a 21-point lead for the first time.
 
Haggerty would score twice for Tulsa and SMU got to the hoop right before the buzzer to send the teams to the locker rooms with the Mustangs leading 52-33.
 
Tulsa shot 40.6 percent from the floor for the half and 25.0 percent on 3-pointers, making four of 16 attempts. Haggerty led the way with 11 points, while Garcia added 10 and seven rebounds. Cobe Williams dished out four assists.
 
The Mustangs connected on 54.1 percent of its first half shots and went 5-of-12 (41.7 percent) from deep. Phelps had 14 in the first half and Harris scored 13 to lead SMU.
 
IN THE SECOND HALF . . .
The Mustangs did not cool down out of the break, making its first four of six shots to take a 61-36 advantage. At the under 12 timeout SMU had outscored Tulsa 24-14 in the second half and led 76-47 after a pair of free throws.
 
SMU pushed its lead over 30 at the 11:22 mark with a layup to go up 78-47. The Mustangs' largest advantage came with 4:47 to play on a 3-point jump shot in transition to put SMU up 93-55. A step back 3-pointer put the Mustangs over the century mark with 2:17 to play. Jesaiah McWright ended the scoring with a corner 3-pointer off an Archie assist to bring the final to 103-70.
 
Tulsa shot 43.3 percent from the floor and hit three 3-pointers. Meanwhile, the Mustangs were 48.5 percent on field goals and 7-of-16 (43.8 percent) on 3-pointers in the second half.
        
GAME NOTES
• Tulsa fell to 10-8 on the season and 1-5 in The American games.
• Tulsa moves to 33-28 all-time against SMU
• The Hurricane is now 19-12 in road games against the Mustangs
• This is the first time the Hurricane have allowed 100 points since a triple overtime game with Colorado State on Dec. 21, 2019, in the Reynolds Center.
• Freshman PJ Haggerty had his 17th double-figure scoring game.
Cobe Williams reached double figures in scoring for the 14th time this season and 67th in his career.
• Freshman Tyshawn Archie scored in double figures for the eighth time this season
• Junior Jared Garcia scored 15 for his seventh double-figure scoring game.
 
The Golden Hurricane has a full week before its next game. Tulsa will head to Houston for a matchup with the Rice Owls on Saturday, Jan. 27. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. and will air on ESPNU.
