Berlanga & Hutchings Punch Their Ticket to NCAA Doubles Championships

Memphis, Tenn. – A successful weekend for a Hurricane doubles team as they win a finals match which grants them their pass to the NCAA Championships in Waco, TX. Maria Berlanga and Lily Hutchings rolled through the ITA Central Championships this week as they won 6 matches.
Berlanga and Hutchings were able to defeat UND's Schulte/Li 8-0 in the initial round of the Double's Tournament. They then went on to defeat Bashir/Octa of Missouri when they beat them 8-1. In the Round of 16, Berlanga and Hutchings took on the No. 69 Mulville/VanVuuren duo of Kansas. They were able to find a win in an 8-6 match. Entering the quarter-final and facing Garcia Ruiz/Gilheany, a duo from the University of Oklahoma, the Tulsa pair won 8-3. The semifinal round proved to be the longest match of the day when Berlanga and Hutchings were able to defeat K-State's Chogsomjar/Santos in a 7-6(8-6), 7-5 match. After the Final round, Maria Berlanga and Lily Hutchings found themselves a way to the NCAA Championships as they defeated the University of Oklahoma's Mester/Shcherbinia duo in the 6-3, 6-2 match.
Berlanga/Hutchings were not the only duo to find success this weekend as Ana Naranjo Martinez and Mariana Manyoma Velasquez worked their way to the double's quarterfinals defeating Farres/Grosmann (Memphis) 8-0 in the Round of 64 and then Chantava/Roselli (WSU) 8-6 in the second round. In the Round of 16, the Hurricane duo beat the No 71 University of Arkansas Gomez/Bienzobas 8-1. Manyoma/Naranjo ended their run when they fell to Chogsmjav/Santos (K-State) 8-6 in the Quarter Final.
On the singles side, the success for Berlanga did not stop as she found her way into the Singles Quarter Final having defeated Kristina Kudryavtseva (WSU) in the first round 6-3, 6-3. She also found her way past Iowa State's Ashlee Narker in a 6-3, 6-2 win. In the Round of 16, which she last year lost in, Berlanga was able to find a win over Christine Canete (Missouri) in a 6-2, 6-4 match. The road came to an end when the No. 56 Alina Shcherbinia (OU) was able to defeat Berlanga 2-6 and 3-6.
Erin McKenzie, Lily Hutchings, and Ana Naranjo Martinez were all able to make it out of the Round of 64. Mariana Manyoma Velasquez also made it through the Round of 64 and Round of 32 only being stopped in the Round of 16 by WSU's Xin Tong Wang in a 6-2, 6-3 decision. Notably, Manyoma was able to conquer the No 116 Gracie Mulville (Kansas) in a match ending in 6-2, 6-2.
