Tulsa Gives a Three-Set Sweep to UTSA

10/20/2024 3:52:00 PM | Volleyball

San Antonio, TX. —  Tulsa volleyball made quick work in Sunday's American Athletic Conference match with The University of Texas–San Antonio. The Hurricane were able to keep the Roadrunners from scoring more than 20 points in each set and winning the match 3-0 (25-18, 25-11, 25-19). This helps the Hurricane by moving them to 5-3 in conference play and 13-7 overall. UTSA falls to 7-14 overall with a 1-7 conference record.

Tulsa was able to maintain firm control of the match only allowing UTSA to score 37 earned points. Tulsa came into Sunday's match after having lost a tough match where control was at a minimum for the Hurricane. Today's match looks like a turnaround as the Hurricane had only four lead changes in the match.

Defensively dominating at the net, Tulsa was able to put up 15 team blocks with Tytiana Johnson providing 10 block assists and one solo block. Also making strong contributions to the blocking force was Rachel Brown as she found herself a part of 6 blocks in the match. Tulsa was able to heavily outweigh the combatting block by only allowing UTSA to obtain 4 team blocks.

On the attacking front for Tulsa, they were able to find 29 team kills with Ari Mongare being the leader at the net with seven. She was not alone as Tatum Tornatta, Tytiana Johnson, and Camryn Lingenbrink were able to contribute 5 kills each. Without the 25 team assists, Tulsa would not have had much success. 11 of those assists were from Brittany Bacorn and 10 assists were from Brayden Hipp. Marta Pecalli was able to add four more assists while also continuing her strong defensive skill with 15 digs. Beth Bayless brought up 9 of the team's total 48 digs.

Success did not stop there as Tulsa held UTSA to a season-low hitting percentage of .008 and not allowing more than .100 percent in any set. UTSA found little success but the success they did find came from Mia Soerensen with 9 kills and Caroline Krueger with 15 digs.

Tulsa returns home on Friday, October 25th, as they host the Blazers of UAB. The first serve is at 6:00 P.M. inside the Donald W. Reynolds Center. Live TV coverage can be found on ESPN+ and Live Stats are found on the Tulsa Volleyball website.

How It Happened

SET 1 | Opening the match with a tight score UTSA was able to establish one of the only leads they had at 5-3. Tulsa quickly decided that was not going to last as they strung together multiple short scoring runs to break open the lead. At the media timeout, Tulsa had established a six-point lead at 15-9. After dropping a few points to UTSA, Tulsa began another run of 4 points to make it 21-13. Tulsa was able to close out the set after an attack error made it 25-18.

SET 2 | UTSA was able to start the set with a kill and their only lead of the set until a service error allowed Tulsa to take the reins. Tulsa then went on an 8-1 run to bring the set to 8-2. The midpoint of the set was back and forth until Ari Mongare was at the service line and the Hurricane strung a four-point run that led to a 16-7 lead. Marta Pecalli was able to take Tulsa up to set point at 24-10 until a block by Mongare and Brown closed set two at 25-11.

SET 3 | With what would be the final set for the match UTSA attempted to turn the tides and came up short only being able to hit .047 percent. With the third set having the most tied scores UTSA seemed to be in the fight until Tulsa began to pull away just shy of the media timeout. After the break, Tulsa continued to increase the lead, but UTSA kept the lead down to 3 for much of the match. Tulsa was able to perform a 7-2 run to close out the final set 25-19.
