Golden Hurricane Sweep UAB for Homecoming

Tulsa, Okla. — Tulsa showed up for Homecoming week on Friday with a 3-0 sweep over the Blazers of UAB (25-19, 25-18, 25-18). This was the 14th time Tulsa has won against UAB in their 17 matchups. Tulsa now moves to a 14-7 record overall and a 6-3 in the AAC. The Blazers fall to 8-12 overall and a conference record of 3-6.
Tulsa was able to recognize previous players who competed as a Golden Hurricane in Friday night's match and gave the alumni a dominant win against a strong serving UAB squad. Tulsa was able to dominate much of the match with only two lead changes which came in sets two and three, in sets they started behind in. This helped the Hurricane to continue their streak after winning last Sunday at UTSA and now at home against UAB.
Tulsa was also able to recognize the great achievement of Brayden Hipp who achieved 1,000 career assists before the match and presented her with a custom volleyball highlighting her accomplishment.
Throughout the match, the Golden Hurricane continued their defensive dominance by putting up 11 total team blocks averaging 3.6 blocks per set. The Hurricane also had a team reception percentage of .957 and collected 49 team digs.
Contributing to much of the success for the Hurricane was senior libero Marta Pecalli who crossed an incredible milestone of 2000 career digs during the second set of the match on Friday. She also found a total of 19 digs throughout the match and had a 1.000 reception percentage with nine receptions. At the net for the defense was once again Tytiana Johnson putting up six block assists and one solo block.
On the offensive end of the match, Tulsa hit for a team attack percentage of .241. Tatum Tornatta was able to lead the Hurricane and who, once again led the fight at 12 kills. Adding fire to the attack was junior outside Beth Bayless and senior middle Rachel Brown each contributing seven kills. From the service line, the Hurricane were able to collect four service aces with two coming from freshman setter Britney Bacorn.
Tulsa continued to improve throughout the match improving from a .178 hitting percentage in the first set to a .289 in the third. The team was also able to control UAB as their hitting percentage dropped from .175 in the first set and ended with .061 in the third. Tulsa was also able to handle the weapons that UAB had by holding Madison Page to only three block assists and one solo block and Jorda Crook was held to only 10 kills.

How It Happened
SET 1 | Tulsa was able to jump out to an early lead and maintain it throughout the set only tying with UAB once. This came after UAB pieced together a few short runs to tie it at 8-8. Tulsa quickly responded with a kill from Beth Bayless, which pushed Tulsa out to an 11-8 lead. Tulsa continued to maintain that lead until 21-19 and closed out the set with a four-point scoring run to close at 25-19.
SET 2 | UAB was able to establish control early in the set by jumping out to a 4-1 lead over Tulsa. Tulsa, under the steady serve of Marta Pecalli, found a 5-0 scoring run only interrupted by a kill from Abby Jones of UAB. Tulsa then continued to tack on two more points to bring the score to 8-5. The lead slowly increased for Tulsa throughout the match by using two- and three-point scoring runs and holding a sideout percentage of 63%. This led the Hurricane to a 25-18 victory in set two.
SET 3 | With a similar story to set two, UAB established an early lead of 1-2 before Tulsa took control and remained in control for the rest of the match. UAB was able to stay close with Tulsa until 9-9 when Tulsa performed a 5-1 run to take it to the set three media timeout at 15-10. Out of the media timeout, Tulsa tacked on two more points to bring the score to 17-10 both teams battled back and forth until 19-17 when Ramatowski called a timeout. Tulsa was able to close out the set with another 5-1 scoring run to close the match and set three at 25-18.
