Berlanga and Hutchings Battle in First Round Exit at NCAA Individual Championships

WACO, Texas — University of Tulsa women's tennis power duo Maria Berlanga and Lily Hutchings faced off against No. 2 seeded Gabriella Broadfoot and Maddy Zampardo of NC State. The Tulsa pair fell in a full match battle with a 6-2, 1-6 0-1 (5-10) score in the windy Waco conditions. Berlanga and Hutchings were able to collect seven wins in the ITA Championships and were undefeated across all sets until the second set of Wednesday's match.
It was a promising start as Berlanga and Hutchings were able to outwork the NC State pair with a dominating 6-2 first-set win. NC State struck early in the set to score the first game as a win. Berlanga and Hutchings struck back with three straight game wins to go up 3-1. NC State's Broadfoot and Zampardo fought to get their second win before TU's duo was able to take three more tight games to take the first set. In set two Broadfoot and Zampardo were able to show why they were chosen as the No. 2 seed as they worked through set two with a 6-1 score over Tulsa's duo. Tulsa took their last set win in a second game of set two with a 40-15 split. NC State was able to string five more game wins to close set two 6-1.
Set three was a battle for both sides with Tulsa falling short. Berlanga and Hutchings scored first and were able to go up 2-0 over the opposing duo. NC State's duo performed a 6-1 run over TU's duo to go up 6-3 late in the set. Tulsa's pair was able to score two more before falling behind and being unable to pass Broadfoot and Zampardo of NC State as the duo closed the final set with a win in a 10-5 fashion.
